From entry level to Strava warrior to competitive racer, there’s something for you in this road gear roundup featuring new clothing from Shimano and Giro. Shimano has updated their men’s Road Performance collection and added a new top tier offering within their S-PHYRE clothing line – The Leggera jersey and shorts.
Meanwhile Giro has introduced their Ondas collection, featuring new clothing for men and women. Their new jerseys and bibshorts are made with Renew recycled polyester, which is largely derived from discarded fishing nets and plastic water bottles.
Shimano Men’s Clothing
The name might throw you off, as Shimano’s Team clothing line is not the top-of-the-line gear the pro racers get, it’s actually their entry level clothing for recreational riders. Their updated Team line offers new riders race inspired graphics and a looser, more forgiving fit. Team pieces feature breathable and quick drying fabrics, and also offer UV protection for daytime rides and reflective accents for visibility in low light.
The Short Sleeve Team jersey is made from 100% polyester. It features a full front zipper, three back pockets and a silicone hem gripper. The Team jersey’s back pockets were designed to not sag or ride up on your back. Short Sleeve Team jerseys are available in six colorways.
For cooler rides, the Thermal Long Sleeve Team jersey is made from a polyester fabric that retains some warmth but still wicks moisture quickly. The knitted mesh side panels help vent excess heat, and the front zipper is a semi-auto locking type from YKK. The Long Sleeve Team jersey comes in five different colors.
Shimano’s Team Bib Shorts feature a Performance 3 chamois, and the same flat mesh straps as their competition grade bibs. The soft stretch thigh grippers are comfortable but offer a secure fit, and both legs have reflective accents on the back. Five colorways are available to match up with the Team jerseys.
If bibs aren’t your style, Shimano also offers the Team shorts. The non-bib model has similar construction to the bibs with a Performance 3 chamois, soft stretch thigh grippers and reflective leg accents. The shorts come in three color options.
Breakaway and Aerolite
The Breakaway and Aerolite lines are intended for performance minded riders, offering aerodynamic fits and higher quality technical fabrics.
The Breakaway jersey has been re-sewn for improved comfort and follows Shimano’s Performance arm pattern. Its blend of fabrics includes 4-way stretch shoulder panels and a moisture wicking body. The easy access back pockets include one with a sweat proof zipper, and the hem band provides full back coverage. Breakaway jerseys are offered in four colors/graphics.
The Breakaway Bib short boasts a Performance 8 chamois, wide leg grippers, and breathable mesh bib straps. It’s durable poly/elastane fabric blend is designed to hold its shape for long term comfort. The Breakaway bibs have reflective accents, and are available in Charcoal or Navy colors.
Shimano’s top tier Aerolite jersey combines an aerodynamic stretch fabric on the front with a breathable mesh back. It’s cut to a Performance Fit, and has longer sleeves and a lower collar to reduce drag. Despite the mesh back panel, the three back pockets were still designed to not sag or shake around when loaded. Seven different colors/graphics are available.
Shimano’s S-PHYRE clothing line is all about achieving what they call a ‘sublime fit’. The big news about the 2021 S-PHYRE collection is the new range topping Leggera jersey and bib shorts, but Shimano has updated existing pieces of this collection as well.
The top notch Leggera jersey features flat stitch seams, a lightweight and highly breathable body, and hems and pockets that will stay secure. The Leggera offers an aerodynamic race fit with extended compression sleeves.
Finishing details include flat elastic waist and sleeve binding, and a flat reversed zipper for optimized aerodynamics. The Leggera jersey is available in four colors.
Shimano’s Leggera bib shorts feature a four layer S-PHYRE chamois that provides a seamless feel, and has a new outer surface that dries 60% faster than the previous type. The bibs were designed with minimal seams, and cut to layer nicely with the Leggera jersey.
The Leggera bibs offer flat, laser cut straps that taper into a lean, breathable mesh back. Shimano is bold enough to say the Leggera bib shorts’ knitted compression fabric ‘boosts performance’ by reducing muscle fatigue and improving circulation.
All of the above Shimano gear is now available in stores.
GIRO Ondas Men’s and Women’s Collection:
Drawing artistic inspiration from the colors and patterns towns along the Portuguese coast, Giro’s Ondas Spring 2021 collection offers a few new pieces for both men and women. The Ondas jerseys and shorts are part of Giro’s Renew series, which contain at least 50% recycled materials. Giro promises the eco-friendly garments offer the same performance and comfort you’d expect from any piece.
Ondas Chrono Expert jersey: $110
The Ondas collection is a specific colorway of the Chrono Expert family which features a formfitting short sleeve jersey with a full front zipper. Made from Renew recycled polyester, the jersey’s main body offers UPF 30+ protection. Mesh side panels allow for airflow, and the three back pockets are expandable. Other touches include a soft zipper guard and hem gripper, not to mention 360° reflectivity.
Aside from the cut and color, the women’s Chrono Expert jersey is identical to the men’s in construction and features. Men’s sizes range from S-XXL, while women’s sizes go from XS-XL.
Ondas Chrono Expert Bib Short/Halter Bib Short: $165
The men’s Ondas Chrono Expert bib short also uses Renew fabric for its main body, and offers even higher UPF 50+ protection. Atop your saddle is Giro’s Renew Series Elastic Interface Chrono Expert chamois, and on your back are three pockets. Mesh straps keep things light up top, and compression leg grippers keep everything snug below. The bib shorts also feature reflective highlights and logos.
The women’s Chrono Expert bibs are again identical to the men’s in terms of materials and features, but they do have one obvious specific difference for women – the halter-style top. The bibs shown above are not the Ondas colorway, but they will feature a similar Portaro Grey Ondas color with a white top, and pink accents to match the women’s jersey. The Chrono Expert bibs are available in Men’s sizes S-XXL and women’s sizes XS-XL.
Ondas Jag and Jag’ette Gloves: $20
Of course you can round off your fresh Giro kit with the Jag or Jag’ette gloves. These gloves feature optimized EVA padding, a sweat-wicking 4-way stretch Lycra upper and an absorbent microfiber wipe. The Jag(ette)s also offer a Super Fit AX Suede three-panel palm and a slim Velcro wrist closure.
The only differences between the unisex/women’s models are color and the sizing, with unisex sizes S-XXL and women’s sizes S-L available.
