Not sure whether to get your child a half-shell or full face helmet? Why not both? Like many of the adult helmets out there now, Kali is offering a convertible full face helmet for children. And it’s part of the Kali Artist Series, which supports artists and results in a rad design.

The Maya Full Face Child – Artist Series is brand new, so new, it didn’t arrive at Sea Otter until the very last day. It’s a great looking helmet that offers true convertible functionality for little rippers. The chin bar removes with the press of a button on either side of the helmet, which gives you a fully functional half lid, or full face for lighter riders. Additional protection is offered through the use of Kali’s Composite Fusion and Contigo EPS foam, and Quad Core Low Density Layer to protect your child from linear and rotational impacts.

Pointing to the fact that the pandemic was tough on a lot of people, including artists, the Kali Artist Series aims to give back. In return, the work of artists like Andrea Irmscher gets applied to the helmet for a cool look. Kali says that there will be two Artist Series versions of this helmet as well as a more standard red & black.

We don’t have many (any?) kids’ convertible full face helmets to compare it to, but the Maya seems pretty light at 524g. That’s for a OS (One Size) shell that should fit heads from 48-52cm. Priced at $140, the helmet is already sold out, but more will be here in about three weeks.

Mission 2.0 Knee Pads

In addition to the helmet, Kali also had their new Mission 2.0 knee pads on display. Meant for all-day trail missions, the pads use a 3D molded knee puck made from the same material as their LDL pads in their helmets. That should make for a flexible, comfortable pad for days with lots of pedaling.

The pads are made from a 4-way stretch material with articulated construction and reinforce seams along with the mesh back panel. Elastic cuffs with silicone grippers hold things in place as there are no straps or adjustments.

The Mission 2.0s are available in S-XL and will sell for $65. Available now.
