absoluteBLACK’s unique, single-sided HOLLOWcage oversize derailleur pulley system is arguably the most unique such upgrade on the market, and now they’ve made it a bit more “normal” looking by switching to a standard carbon fiber injection molding process for the mono plate.

It’s a new type of carbon (for them) with a glossier finish that makes it look more like carbon fiber. They say it’s the same material and process used on the SRAM RED AXS derailleur’s stock cages, just with a different (and dimpled) shape.

One of the benefits of this mono-plate design is that it can bend slightly, helping keep the lower jockey wheel pulley aimed more directly at the chainring, reducing lateral loading on the bearings.

Admittedly, the original looked a little like plastic, so this should help visually justify the €399 price.

They also now offer the lower lock-ring in colors besides the original’s flashy Rainbow/Oil Slick. Keep it a bit more subtle with black, titanium (color), gold, or red.

If you’ve never seen aB’s OSPW before, there are quite a few things that make it unique…

Rather than a standard two-piece cage that sandwiches pulleys between them, the HOLLOWcage uses a single mono plate with a massively oversized lower pulley that spins the toothed jockey wheel around a large diameter ring.

They use a full ceramic design, with bearing races made out of 100% Zirconia Oxide ceramic, and balls are made of Silicon Nitride ceramic. They verify the material composition using X-ray diffraction by Lucideon Ltd, a specialist in ceramics and materials science.

The upper guide pulley uses a special rubber ring around it to soften the chain’s contact with it, which they say reduces chain noise by ~5db, or about 40% over a standard Shimano Dura-Ace derailleur.

MSRP is $419 / €399, available for Shimano Dura-Ace 9250 only at launch. Original owners of the HOLLOWcage V1 can get a discounted upgrade. I’ve been riding the original for a couple of years and it’s been great, and it is indeed noticeably quieter than stock cages.

GRAPHENlube wax chainlube updates

absoluteblack graphenlube wax chain lube in new 50ml size.

If you’ve wanted to try their graphene-infused wax chain lube but been turned off by the price, they’ve just added a smaller 50ml bottle for $43.90 (€39.90). They still offer a tiny 14ml sample size, but the 50ml bottle lets you immerse the chain if you want, or get quite a few drip applications out of it…enough for thousands of kilometers of riding.

They’ve also recently updated the formula to last longer in wet conditions, claiming dramatically longer-lasting performance than their competition:

comparison chart of wax chain lubes.

Here’s how they tested, in their words:

“All chains were prepared with single lube application according to manufacturer instructions. Friction test at 250W resistance, 100rpm cadence, 40km/h speed, 25deg C and 25% humidity. The test continued until the chain reached 8W losses. Chains and testing machine had a 5km warmup/break-in period. First 50km on the graph were recorded in DRY conditions. Without stopping the machine after the 50km mark chains were continuously sprayed with liquid to simulate wet road conditions. The liquid contains water, trace amounts of diesel oil and small amounts of micronized alumina powder to simulate the contaminants which get onto the chain when riding in the rain.”

I’ve been using their original formula for several years and really like this one, too. If you have the means, it’s worth a try.

Are the pulley bearings serviceable; and is the rubber noise-reducing ring replaceable?
Soince you’ve used one for a while, does the chain leave rub marks on the cage?
Not dissing the product, genuinely interested to know. Thanks in advance.

I did service mine with easy. The noise reducing feature are the two cleverly installed X-ring rubber orings. I usually take them out for cleaning and put back in place. Been using it for around two years and the rubbers are still good condition. the only rub marks I see are from the oil/grease paste once the chain accumulates too much gunk, but this is easy to clean and it is usually on the back of the cage close to upper pulley guide. Looking at photos and my cage I see they changed this little guide a bit to allow more space it seems.

I can’t believe that this Snake oil company still exists…

are you referring to “plastic bearings” which turned to be actually ceramic? Check their IG post. They even show test results made by some independent lab with UK government accreditation. Or you mean the injection moulding technique that is used in Sram AXS and Dura Ace cages as well as Magura carbotecture?

The results of Zero Friction Cycling make this lube test sound a bit dubious, to put it mildly. It’s supposed to totally blow REX Black Diamond Wax out of the water which leads ZFC’s ranking, while the other AB product in ZFC’s test, AB Graphene Wax (not the same but presumably very similar), ranked third from the bottom, completely failed once conditions got wet, and generally did quite a bit worse than simple candle wax.

ZFC never tested their commercial formula of either lube or wax. You would know this if you followed him since the beginning. I remember this saga from few years ago. They sent him prototype lube samples for evaluation long before launching the product and quite a few formulas as he was bragging about it. Then when they launched the product he actually posted his results a DAY before their launch for some samples he thought were the final commercial product. When AB pressed on him to take it down as this was not the final formula he banned them from his IG account as he struggled to give comprehensive answer. Adam is using super primitive methods that say nothing about friction. A turbo trianer and a veneer measuring 10 links without precise preload is as amateurish as it can get. Go to AB sample lube test that he posted and deep deep in his long review you will find he lubed the chain every 600-700km where all the other lubes on his test he was relubing every 150-250km. I remember how Ceramispeed was not happy about AB better results so Adam tested CS new formula back then by relubing every 150km (this is in his protocol) and AB he tested with relubing every 600km and suddenly CS was better. This just shows how easy it was for him to manipulate things that he is selling on his website. Honesly I stopped following this guy some time ago as he claims he was independent and at he same time paddling all the lubes he says are “best” on his page. That is as far from being independent as one can get. You will also know, if you follow the topic for long enough, that before CS acquired Friction Facts, they were showing how wildly different are Shimano chains out of the box. If my memory serves me well they were varying from 6.5 -13W losses out of the box! So what that FF guy did before testing different lubes is going through batch of chains to pick all that had almost the same watt loss from the box to make it fair. AB also posted such findings couple of years ago claiming they standardize chains before testing because of this very reason. Adam does not even have a machine to do it because he can’t measure frictional losses, so his tests are flawed from the start.

You need to read more carefully at ZFC. Absolute Black’s graphene wax didn’t do well in testing. Adam did testing for the Absolute Black’s Graphen Lube during its development and was impressed, seemingly very impressed. He has not, however, tested the finished product.

I have the first Hollowcage and I love it. I don’t care about the watts, I would probably save more if i stopped drinking for a week, but that’s not going to happen. It looks super cool and works flawlessly so I’m happy. I will look into that upgrade for extra bling too

Make some road/gravel flattop compatible rings. Your ring line up is barely relevant.

Yet AB lubes scored terrible performances on ZFC tests (older version)

he never tested their actual lubes. He tested some prototypes long time ago before lube was launched. He was involved in development supposedly. And he posted results before AB launched the lube.. Also ZFC tests wear of chain and AB tests friction losses. This is not the same thing

So nice to see awesome products getting even better and better, despite beeing a fan or not of OSPWs in general, let’s admit this one checks all the boxes for those who want to stand out, now with the visible carbon effect its even better. Great to see a more reasonable sized bottle of this liquid gold, I have the big one and it’s just lasting too long!

‘Arthur’ / ‘Hans’ / ‘LubePro’ / ‘Elias’ …. I wonder who they could possibly be affiliated with – and all written in exactly the same style.

great news! my V1 works perfectly but I do rather glossy look over mat finish time to find the original invoice and get the new one with their upgrade promo!
