ABUS designed its new half-shell helmet with a “skeleton-like” internal structure, for anyone who rides enduro or aggressive trails but wants more breathability than a full-face helmet permits.
The deep-fitting CliffHanger gets what ABUS calls the Acti-Cage reinforcement system, a support structure inside the helmet’s EPS foam.
Incorporating that allowed ABUS’ designers to subtract material, leading to weight savings and more vents. The CliffHanger seeks to let your dome air out with 14 generous air vents. And at 380 grams (claimed, size medium), it weighs in on the lighter end of the half-shell spectrum alongside buckets like the POC Tectal.
ABUS said team rider Richie Schley played an “instrumental” role in the CliffHanger’s years-long development.
“We have been working on the CliffHanger helmet for three years now and I am totally stoked on how awesome it came out. Looks cool, is super lightweight, has great airflow, and is very comfortable,” Schley assessed. “I think we totally nailed it with the colors as well.”
ABUS CliffHanger: Mips, QUIN, Fit
The CliffHanger consolidates systems from around the ABUS lineup, like its Zoom-Ace boa-style fitment system, ponytail outlet in the back, and magnetic chinstrap closure. The Zoom-Ace not only cinches around the wearer’s head horizontally, but also adjusts vertically. According to ABUS, the full-circumference adjustment lets it “hover” evenly around your head — instead of perching on top.
Riders can choose Mips rotational impact protection if they so choose. And it’s also compatible with QUIN, a crash detection sensor that transmits notifications. That includes a GPS spot through your smartphone if and when you have an accident.
An adjustable visor helps you keep scratchy branches or the setting sun out of your eyes. Twist it up to stash your goggles without undoing the strap.
The ABUS CliffHanger launches today in nine different colors across three sizes. MSRP: $200 with Mips.
