The new Osprey Talon 22 and Tempest 20 hiking and biking packs are now boasting some serious green credentials. PFC-free DWR waterproofing treatment is a given, but Osprey has gone further with one of the first commercial uses of a new fabric made from Robic-recycled high-tenacity nylon. Also, the all-new AirScape back panel is created through injection molding, which Osprey says reduces plastic use to almost zero.
New Sustainable Osprey Pack
The men’s Talon 22 and women’s Tempest 20 day packs feature Osprey’s all-new AirScape back panel design. The injection-molded panel is a die-cut foam piece featuring horizontal channels to allow flex in the vertical plane while staying flat horizontally.
The new design is said to eliminate back panel rounding. So, even if you have a full reservoir in there, or you’ve stuffed it to near breaking point, the back panel should sit flat against your back.
Osprey’s BioStretch harness and continuous wrap hipbelt should ensure a close-to-body fit – an absolute must if you plan on riding with the pack. A pack without these features will likely swing around behind you and out to the sides as you corner hard. So, the new Osprey Talon 22 and Tempest 20 should be ideal for activities that require dynamic body movement over technical terrain.
The new Osprey packs are composed of a fabric made from Robic recycled high-tenacity nylon. What’s cool about this fabric is that it has been approved by Bluesign, an independent verifier of sustainable fabrics.
Osprey Talon 22 and Tempest 20 Features
The Osprey Talon 22 and Tempest 20 are packed with super useful features. It seems no detail has been overlooked; these packs have everything you need for an action-packed day in the great outdoors and nothing you don’t. There’s a place for everything, it seems.
Access to the main compartment is via a dual zipper. An internal zippered mesh pocket with a key clip ensures you don’t lose your car keys halfway up a mountain. The top panel features another zippered slash pocket and there’s another easy-access expandable stretch mesh harness pocket too. Two dual-zippered hip-belt pockets provide easy access to snacks on the go.
Added bonuses include a tuck-away ice ax attachment with bungee tie-off, a stow-on-the-go trekking pole attachment, a LidLock bike helmet attachment, and a light attachment for road commutes. An external reservoir sleeve keeps you hydrated on the go.
Pricing & Availability
The new Osprey Packs retail at $130, that’s a $30 price hike compared to the previous Talon 22 and Tempest 20. Perhaps not too much of an ask considering the green credentials of these hiking and biking packs. Both come with Osprey’s All Mighty Lifetime Guarantee.
Osprey offers two sizing options; S/M and M/L. They offer detailed advice on how to measure yourself up for a good fit which involves measuring the distance between your C7 vertebrae and the iliac crest. Check out their website for more details.

I’ve got the current model Talon 22. Best pack ever. Its comfortable, lightweight, and the overal design of every detail is perfect. If these new models are even better that’s saying something.

Some of your claims seem to be contradictory, or inaccurate, you might want to clarify these details “…the all-new AirScape back panel is created through injection-molding, which Osprey say reduces plastic use to almost zero.” Injection molding would reduce production WASTE compared to cutting it out of foam/plastic, but its still made of plastic right…?
“The injection-molded panel is a die-cut foam piece…” Injection-molding and die-cutting are different processes. I think you mean die cut EVA foam glued to an injection molded plastic panel…
But these are great packs, and I love to see Osprey’s new focus on sustainability.
