Yeah, you did read that right. If you have a tool in your garage that’s part of the Worx ecosystem of battery-powered tools, you can power an Aventon Pace 350 eBike with the very same batteries. The WORX Power Share family of tools shares the same 20v batteries, and by being able to “stack” the batteries to increase the voltage, you can jump from a 20v Drill/Driver or 20v Cooler, stack another 20v battery and run your 40v chainsaw, or add 2 more to run an 80v lawnmower. It seems like a pretty cool system.

But, what about the bike?

Aventon teamed up with Worx Tools to create the Pace 350, an eBike that is powered by Worx’s Power Share system batteries. Worx claims that this is the only bike that is powered by cordless, battery-driven tool batteries.

The Pace 350 has a 350W hub motor and touts a range of up to 28 miles with a top speed of 20mph on a single charge. There are 5 pedal assist levels, or a throttle when no assistance is wanted.

The backlit, easy-to-read LCD display shows the rider’s battery life, speed, pedal assist level, and distance traveled. It uses an accessible step-through frame design for easy mounting and dismounting. Both of the Power Share batteries can be charged at once on the included quick charger and charged to a full charge in just 4 hours.

Whether you are commuting or just toolin’ around town, the Aventon Pace 350 will get you there with the eco-friendly Power Share battery power, making it great for many types of bike riders.

The Pace 350 includes (2) 20V 8.0Ah Power Share batteries and (1) Power Share dual charger for rapid recharging.

I’m a big fan of this idea.

Yeah. We’re well overdue a battery fitting and connection standard for e-bikes and I know the bike industry can’t do true ‘standards’, but for commuter / errand bikes with long use life as a design brief it should be a priority. Power tool cells are a good work-around.

I have never heard of a drill battery starting a fire, and they are abused for years. It would be especially great for anything intended for kids.

Have you ever seen the ride-on/e-moto StaCyc bikes? 100% same concept and execution as this, butwithout pedals/cranks, and without outright saying, “these are drill batteries”

It is only because you have not looked for them. Just as many Li-ion power tool battery fires out there, if not more. Two major differences are: 1) power tools (batteries and products) are better regulated (power of OSHA vs. CPSC), and thus have had more robust safety standards applied earlier in their development (which is at least a decade ahead of ebike batteries in use data and design refinement), and 2) power tool batteries are a fraction of the power of an ebike battery, and thus typically do not cause as much damage when they fail.

Comparing the two at this point is like comparing apples to oranges

I need dewalt power

It’s cool, and anyone who listens to the JRA Podcast knows that we’re into this sort of thing, but the line, “or a throttle when no assistance is wanted” is a really awkward way to dance around saying, “a throttle for when you want the motor to move the bike without any pedaling.”

The idea is nice, but every advantage has its disadvantage. The main disadvantage being that if batteries and chargers are easily available, this kind of bike will become a prime target for thieves.
These days you can often know an e-bike being sold is stolen because the seller doesn’t have a charger or battery. Quite a few bike stores make sure whenever someone comes in to just buy a charger or battery that they are in fact the legitimate owner of the bike they don’t have batteries or a charger for.Not a fan of proprietary stuff, but in the case of e-bikes it’s still one small thing that makes life a little harder for thieves.

By my calculation this is actually a Pace “320”.

Interesting idea and should be able to leverage to a lower price against the sheer volume rechargeable tool makers sell batteries in.

Tool batteries don’t belong in high powered applications like this one. 40v@8ah is way less power than competing bikes with more features for less. Most of these bikes have at least 48v@13ah and may be as high as 52v@20ah. The motor size is also very small for a bike at this price point. Most ebike manufacturers have moved to 750w motors, some are powerful than that. Also for an ebike in this price point I’d expect at least a front shock.

The ride on electric mowers are making the same mistake some have 6 or more 80v batteries. Tool batteries are about the most expensive way you can buy lithium based batteries. On riding mowers a lifepo4 battery would be way smarter. They could give you twice the battery capacity and 3-6x the cycle life for the same money, but hey then they couldn’t sell you super expensive too batteries.

So I’m guessing this is a 36V bike since your review failed to mention.. How far will two drill batteries go under your frame?

This is a very compelling idea to drive wider adoption by making eBike ownership more accessible. Kudo’s to Aventon for exploring this and taking a step in this direction. Good news brief, Ron. Thank you!

How will they get these to be UL2849 Certified as required by CPSC?
