Batch continues to bring quality and affordability together. A few weeks ago, we saw them do this on the mountainbike side of the market, releasing the MB.1 and MB.2. The hardtails retail for $600 and $700, respectively, and feature modern geometry and affordable yet modern components.

Now, Batch aims to repeat the process, now in the gravel corner of the industry. Now, surely, these new gravel offerings won’t completely knock your socks off, but that isn’t Batch’s intention. However, will they get new riders out on two wheels without the incredible cost barrier?

Absolutely.

Batch GB.1

This bike is Batch’s entry into gravel. The GB.1 features a 6061 double-butted aluminum frame, a clutched 9-speed derailleur, and tubeless-ready rims and tires. The frame comes in four sizes–50cm, 53cm, 56cm, and 59cm–and features integrated rack and fender mounting points.

Here are some key features:

  • Fork: 1-1/8″ Aluminum Gravel with flat mount brake mounts
  • Brakes: Tektro MD-C310 mechanical disc
  • Rotors: 160mm (F/R)
  • Shifters: MicroShift Sword Black
  • Derailleur: MicroShift Sword RD-G7005M, 9/10 speed
  • Cassette: Index 9-speed, 11-46T
  • Crankset: Forged alloy / 38T chainring
  • Tires: 700 x42mm
  • Wheels: 700c
  • Price: $999.99

GB.2

The Batch GB.2 starts where the GB.1 leaves off. They share the same 6061 hydroformed double-butted aluminum frame, but save some weight with a bit higher component spec. Helping shed some weight and absorb light trail chatter, the GB.2 is equipped with a carbon fork. Like the GB.1, four sizes are available.

  • Fork: 1-1/8″ – 1-1/2″ carbon gravel fork
  • Brakes: Tektro MD-C310 mechanical disc
  • Rotors: 160mm (F/R)
  • Shifters: MicroShift Sword Black
  • Derailleur: MicroShift Sword RD-G7005M, 9/10 speed
  • Cassette: Index 9-speed, 11-46T
  • Crankset: Forged alloy / 38T chainring
  • Tires: 700 x42mm
  • Wheels: 700c
  • Price: $1,299.99

Not trying to pick nits, but how is a $1300 aluminum frame bike with mechanical disc brakes and Microshift shifters and derailleurs fall into the affordable realm?

Well, relative to the Bugatti bike posted elsewhere on the site, this is virtually free. And while affordability is always a personal matter, these don’t seem out of step in terms of cost and spec.

Bikerumor used the term quality and affordability in their article, I wasn’t comparing it to an unattainable niche toy for the rich.

I think you missed the joke…and the part where I said that its pricing seemed to be in line with other bikes at this price point and that affordability is relative. I agree that the term “affordable” is overused, but please give some examples of bikes that offer the same or better spec for less money. Stuff has gotten really expensive, so if your point is that nothing cycling related is affordable I’d agree.
