Bell Gage lightweight road bike helmet

Bell’s new Gage road helmet came out of hiding a bit ago, and it’s making its real world debut today at the Ronde Van Vlaanderen. Official specs and all that are out now, along with the full spectrum of color options, and there are a lot of them!

The CPSC-approved model will come in at 240g (claimed) and have 26 vents. Construction uses an in-molded Microshell with internal reinforcements and channels to vent air through the insides. X-Static padding should keep the funk at bay, and “lightweight” webbing, buckle and cam-lock adjustment clasps. Price is $190, and you’ll have your choice of eight colors, all of which are shown below…

Getting smaller, less material, and costing more.
Seems to be a trend all around.

One thing is for sure, they are good at giving a nice helmet bad graphics.

Disagree on the graphics comment. These by far are some of the most subdued colorways in a long time. And in reality, I’d trust my head to a Bell with bad graphics over anything else. As the old saying goes, “if you have a 10-dollar head, wear a ten dollar helmet.”

@fuzzbuzz – What do you mean by that? As far as I remember ALL helmets on the market are tested and certified in the same way – do you have any idea how one could be safer than another when they pass the same tests?

It seems that all Bell helmets since…. the Sweep (2006) (READERS: What was before the sweep? The Ghisallo?) have all gone for the pointy end parts on the back of the helmet. Is there a scientific reasoning for this?

Markus Bohler was wearing a Bell Volt when he crashed at the Bethel Spring Series Crit in Bethel, CT a couple weeks ago and died. He suffered multiple skull fractures. His helmet was totally intact after the impact, his skull not so much. It was a fairly standard road race crash, his helmet just didnt shatter or absord any of the impact. You mileage may vary, but I am not riding a Bell anytime soon.

Just because all helmets pass the same minimum test does not mean that all helmets provide the same amount of protection. reading is fundamental. 87.
