It’s a steering damper for mountainbikes from Stabletec, called the Dampenator – it had limited success. It assembles right on to your existing headset. The company is from Huntington Beach, California.

Good in combination with a Softride suspension stem and Girvin suspension fork for the ultimate in lack of trail feel.

It is a steering damper; it does sound like y’all understand what they do. They prevent high-speed “head shake” (precession), not vibration.

Useless info: the old school way to reduce head shake (before dampers) was to over tighten the headset a little bit.

Once again- you ‘damp’ things like motion and vibration. So it’s a damper- not a dampener.

I’m late to the party but my guess was steering damper similar to the Scott damper used on dirt bikes.
