Photo submitted by Pekka Tahkola, “I’m happy to live in the world’s best winter cycling city, Oulu, Finland. Of all trips 22% are made by bicycle (yearly average) and people cycle even through harshest winter with their regular bicycles, such as mine here which is a Swedish-made Svalan, from about 1959. An intensive network of about 800km of separated bicycle paths makes it possible to maintain bike routes in excellent condition. The maintenance of main routes is prioritized over driveways, and they have to be cleaned before 7am and 3pm in case of snowfall. Located 200km south of the arctic circle, Oulu enjoys rather cold weather, for example the average temperature in February is -14°C (~7F).”
