It’s about time someone addressed the horrible problem of drag associated with wheel skewers. This slow-inducing problem has been the bane of Cancellara wannabes everywhere, and finally Trek has brought this unspoken aero terror to light.
From Trek team liason Ben comes this just-blurry-enough-as-to-be-annoyingly-vague phone cam shot of the new Trek Speed Concepts aero skewer. Sure, it still sticks out from the dropout, but the lever folds back behind the dropout and mirrors the lines of the chainstay, giving those annoying air molecules a clean exit into the spinning vortex of wheel churn. I wonder if they’ve got dimples.
Since the pros swap bikes rather than change a tire/wheel during the time trials, I wonder why they don’t just use low profile bolts to secure the wheel and forego the skewer altogether?
