Lance is back. OK, more like Ben Foster playing the role of Lance Armstrong in The Program. Realistically, even Hollywood would struggle to write a script with this many turns. A story that took one of the most celebrated sports figures in the world, only to have everything come crashing down after the curtain was pulled back exposing the dark side of professional cycling. Whatever your feelings towards Lance Armstrong, judging by the trailer, it looks like it could be a great film.

If can’t wait until it hits theaters in a month, and you happen to have DirecTV, you can watch it now…

As part of their deal with a few movie studios, DirecTV makes a number of titles like The Program available through DirecTV Cinema a month early. So if you have DirecTV, and are willing to pay $12.99 for the HD version, or $11.99 for the SD version, you can check out The Program with a 72 hour rental. It’s too bad DirecTV told me I have too many trees to get a signal or I’d probably be watching this tonight…

From DirecTV and AT&T:

AT&T* is offering DIRECTV customers an exclusive look at “The Program.” The film stars Ben Foster (“Lone Survivor”), Dustin Hoffman (“Chef”), Chris O’Dowd (“St. Vincent”), Jesse Plemons (“Black Mass”), Lee Pace (“Guardians of the Galaxy”) and Guillaume Canet (“The Beach”). “The Program” will be available today, on DIRECTV CINEMA, 1 month before it debuts in theaters. It premiered at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival.

Academy Award® nominated Stephen Frears (“The Queen,” “Philomena”) directs the true story of the rise and fall of Lance Armstrong, one of the most celebrated and controversial men in recent history. Sports journalist David Walsh (Chris O’Dowd) becomes convinced banned substances fuel Armstrong’s performances during the Tour de France victories. He then hunts for evidence that will expose Armstrong (Ben Foster).

“‘The Program is a riveting and gripping drama with stunning recreations of Armstrong’s cycling races,” said Hanny Patel, vice president, Revenue & Content Marketing, AT&T.  “Ben Foster gives an extraordinary lead performance and we’re pleased to deliver this film 1 month before it hits theaters.”

“The Program” will be available for 72-hour rental. You can view it in 1080p HD (Blu-ray format) for $12.99 and in standard-definition (SD) for $11.99. DIRECTV CINEMA is a premium pay-per-view service that brings exclusive access to select, new releases before they’re in theaters. Plus get access to 1000s of shows and movies instantly with DIRECTV On Demand.

I couldn’t even finish watching the whole trailer. Yaaaawn. Now that the entire story is so well known, there’s really no need to make a dramatic production out of it. The reality was enough drama.

If Betsy Andreu isn’t playing herself in this movie I’m not interested.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, a fine portrayal by Ben Foster. He’s uncannily an Armstrong lookalike.

Good report if you do not know the Armstrong story. Cinematographically a film to forget as soon as possible!

In 20 years, after 400 movies about Lance Armstrong, people will still be making new ones, and calling them “the untold story”. Apparently, this turnip has so much blood to give.

But by then, I’ll be more interested in the untold story of Chris Froome.

To be completely honest, this movie was pretty bad.

You’re better off just watching the documentaries than a poor imitation of what happened. Ben Foster looks and sounds like Lance, but the story and execution otherwise is really lacking, and I kept thinking to myself when I was watching it “oh here’s the scene where x happens”.
