GU is celebrating 25 years of fueling athletes, and what better way to feed the party than with Birthday Cake! For a limited time, they’ll offer GU Birthday Cake Energy Gel in singles or multipacks online and through shops. Check out their anniversary landing page for a cool timeline graphic showing the brand and product history. Now, where to put that candle…

PRESS RELEASE: It all started in a Berkeley, California kitchen in 1993. Just over 25 years ago, Dr. Bill Vaughan formulated the first GU Energy Gel as a more digestible fuel for his daughter, a top ultramarathoner. What he created was a product that enabled athletes to fuel breakthrough performances.

Innovation was what launched GU Energy Labs 25 years ago and since then, GU has been on a mission to serve athletes by optimizing every aspect of diet and nutrition.

“In the late ‘80s, we recognized that endurance athletes weren’t feeding their bodies with the nutrients they needed most, and their performance was suffering as a result. That was the spark that led my father to research the role nutrition plays in exercise physiology. The original GU Gel is a significant outcome of that research.” said Brian Vaughan, co-founder and CEO of GU Energy Labs. “I look back on all that we’ve done as a company, all the incredible performances we’ve helped fuel, and I’m thrilled for what the future holds.”

To celebrate its 25 years, the family-owned company crafted a delicious, limited-edition Birthday Cake Energy Gel, which packs all the same functional ingredients GU is known for in a celebratory packet.

Birthday Cake Energy Gel, box of 24 MSRP $36, box of 8 MSRP $12, single MSRP $1.50

Birthday Cake Energy Gel is a perfect mid-run, mid-ride treat. Created for daily training, the Birthday Cake Gel packs energy-dense calories in a portable 100-calorie packet to keep athletes fueled and feeling good.

Birthday Cake Energy Gel provides carbohydrates that use non-competing pathways to help maximize absorption and utilization while diminishing stomach distress. Each packet also delivers sodium, the primary electrolyte lost in sweat, to ensure hydration by maintaining water balance as well as branched-chain amino acids to reduce mental fatigue and decrease muscle damage.

I really like GU gels for road races since they’re more viscous than clif gels I can get them down quickly and get my hands back on the bars. The issue is because they’re not stocked at any grocery store it’s a PIA to get them and I really wish they and all the other gel makers would come up with some litter leash the way clif has. It’s a pain in the butt having to try and eat the gel along with hang onto the little torn off part while riding.

You make comments on a industry news site but don’t have the capacity to order from one of the 200 or so online shops that can have it at your door in a couple days for free shipping if you order enough. Sounds like you would. Keep that inventory of yours on the ups. Amazon Prime, dude. Check it.

Not really; I race about 25 days a year 10 of which are crits, and 4 are time trials with an off XC mtb Race mixed in so at best I’m using these gels 10 days a year in RR’a. Not worth keeping in stock; for training I just eat normal food so when it comes to a race weekend I typically have an ohh crap moment and grab a few clif gels from the local grocery store. I don’t buy food at the bike shop. They provide zero value to the purchasing experience so why should I pay 2x the pricing of adequate substitute goods.

GU has a shelf life of 11-12 months. That’s your fault for not changing your strategy. You’re like a bug to light.

You guys aren’t going to believe this: a lot of real-life bike shops carry GU products. Seriously, I was at a bike shop and was like… wow they have all kinds of bike stuff in here.
