Launched over the summer in shiny UK-made silver, Chater-Lea’s classic Grand Tour Cranks now come in limited edition satin black to coordinate with more modern matte bike builds. First teased to be coming ‘back in black’ earlier this autumn, Chater-Lea says customer demand was high for a stealthy option to their new machined alloy cranks. And of course, since it’s Black Friday, they’re offering a bit of an extra deal to get you riding a new crankset through the big shopping weekend…

Due to popular demand Chater-Lea have produced a limited edition production of their premium Grand Tour cranksets in satin anodized black. Both the sub-compact double 46/30T and single ring options are available – 36T or 40T. The three-arm retro modern, 100% British-made crankset shares all of the same tech as the silver originals, developed for classy road & all-road riding custom bikes.

Chater-Lea Grand Tour Cranks – Tech details

Chater-Lea Grand Tour Crankset, classic British road bike style, modern detail materials, UK-made alloy square taper all-road gravel 1x sub-compact road cranks

The UK-made alloy cranks are CNC-machined from 7050 T7451 alloy and fit a square taper bottom bracket (110mm for 1x, 113mm for 2x). The cranks all have 170mm arms, with 142mm Q-factor. The 1x rings feature narrow/wide profiles for chain retention, and doubles get machined teeth with shift pins to work with 9-11sp chains.

The black cranks come standard with raw stainless steel hardware, but Chater-Lea says it’ll be possible to get the PVD-coated brass-look hardware too.

Pity they don’t make these with an integrated 30mm spindle instead of square taper, keeping everything else the same.

The square taper people still buy Sugino or Rene Herse.
Sugino make Shimano pattern 24mm spindle cranks in shiny black
or shiny silver. Sugino OX2 cranks.

White Industries makes a classic-looking 30mm spindle crank if memory serves.

Yep, White Ind has the 30mm spindle (R30), five crank arm lengths, far more gearing options, and better looking IMHO.

Shame they are made in the USA and not UK though. Article is a bit deceiving!
