Ramato is the name of the early Italian lugged steel road bike that Wilier used as a canvas for their pioneering chrome-plated painting process to finish the first galvanized bikes. The result was the uniquely stunning glossy copper & chrome finish.

Wilier teased its return in this limited edition modern retro lugged steel Superleggera Ramato in 2015 in chrome-plated glory. Then, they adapted the high-gloss copper finish for their carbon aero Cento10AIR Ramato celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Giro d’Italia a year and a half later for Filippo Pozzato.

Wilier describes the new Filante SLR Ramato edition as an homage to the bikemaker’s history in northern Italy – with a copper front end, chromed seatstays, and modern gloss black in between. Originally just a limited edition, now you can get a Ramato edition of their top-tier modern carbon road bikes for an extra fifteen hundred euros over the standard frameset alone.

Beyond a mere hue, Ramato encompasses Wilier’s unwavering passion for cycling and unrivaled craftsmanship, a classic emblem of Italian heritage.”

2023 Wilier Filante SLR Ramato x Campy Super Record Wireless

Doing a little comparison math suggests this bike should retail for around 14,500€. Curiously, Wilier hasn’t yet mentioned exactly how much this complete Filante SLR Ramato built up with Campagnolo Super Record Wireless will cost you. We know for sure that the Ramato frameset alone sells for 6500€, and the new Campy groupset could add 5200€ retail on top of that. So it sounds like a case of: “if you have to ask, you can’t afford it”.

But it is pretty.

It looks nice I guess, but just like that chrome seat stays are not actually chrome, that front part of the bike is not Ramato.
The lovely colors of the chrome-plating technique the dubbed Ramato (a very environmentally unfriendly proces by the way) are so cool because the steel still is visible underneath the color, sort of like anodized aluminium. That metal shine is what makes it so beautiful. With this new bike, because it is carbon, that is not the case, they merely replicated that effect with paint. Not to bad, I must say, but no real home-plating.

I agree, painted carbon looks rather… cheap. A little correction: steel is not visible under cromovelato finish. Underneath the color toning lies 3-layer chrome plating (Cu, Ni, Cr – in that order). I know because I’ve restored my 1981 Colnago Super that needed a fresh chrome on the fork. The old chrome was cracked in some places and has been falling off, leaving bare steel unprotected from rust.

Reading the other posts, I must say that I’ve seen other Wilier carbon models painted this Ramato ‘copper’, and they were stunning. These photos do not do it justice. The same can be said for the high gloss blue, which does not seen to be offered on this model.
