Seems like this is getting to be like Mafia Wars (which, for the record, we will not play so please don’t ask us to join your ‘family’).  In response to the “There’s a perfectly good path right next to the road you stupid cyclist” facebook group that suggests drivers should door us as we ride by, cyclists have launched the “I prefer to ride my bike in the street so deal with it you stupid motorist” group.

As of this post, it already has 1,804 members.  Join today and let’s get some more press for our side of the story.  Oh, and if you think Facebook will pull down the other one, I wouldn’t hold your breath. They’re getting mad page hits, which translates to lots of ads served.  And despite all the hype around the other one, their group still hasn’t been updated since last November.

The anti-cycling Facebook group is hateful, especially considering that it’s administrators advocate actually hurting cyclists. However, I don’t think that fighting fire with fire, so to speak, by creating a Facebook group that ends with “stupid motorists” in the name is going to produce any help for cyclists in raising awareness of just how vulnerable we are out on the streets. Additionally, the pro-cycling group’s name says “I prefer to ride my bike in the street…” While this is true, cycling in the street is entirely legal so we enjoy as much of the privilege of the use of public roads as motorists. I think this is an important point in this fight to get recognize as equal users of the road.

Disagree. “Fire with fire” is as good as it gets. Frankly I would fight them with the fire hose of a big stick upside their head, but the government frowns on that.

Any motorist who does not appreciate that they are driving 3200lbs of death (regardless of a cyclist in the equation or not) is indeed stupid. I had a woman tell me ‘you are on a bike, I am in a car, you get behind me.” Is that not stupid … when I signaled my intent to make a left turn in stop-and-go traffic? Where was she going to get if I got behind her? 4ft farther down the road? Maybe it isn’t stupid; it is moronic, inane, ridiculous, or maybe even retarded.

I just hope that none of the 34000 stupid motorists get fired up to buzz me. I look at it as assault and I will defend myself.

I dream of becoming a driving instructor one day so I can teach up-coming drivers to be more respectful of their fellow man.
