Detroit’s Shinola Starts Shipping Bikes, First Dealers On Board

Shinola Runwell chromoly steel city commuter bicycle made in America by Waterford

We announced Shinola’s Waterford-made bikes at the beginning of the month, and now their first model is shipping.

The Runwell is shipping in Red (above) in size 55, retail is $3,500. Frame is chromoly and comes as shown with fenders, front rack, chainguard, disc brakes and Shimano Alfine 11 internally geared hub. Also available is the Bixby, a curvier cruiser-looking commuter bike, shown below. It gets a 3-speed rear hub, disc brakes and fenders, but no racks. Both are available directly through Shinola until more retailers are set up.

Speaking of which, Golden Saddle (LA), One By One (Minneapolis), American Cyclery (San Francisco), and Copenhagen Cycles (Chicago) are signed on already, and they expect about 20 dealers to be set up by February 1.

The Bixby is available in Men’s 57 in Char for now. More sizes and colors in both will follow.

These look awesome. I hope the price tag doesn’t hinder them, because these could be collectors items someday. Super-cool Motor-City flavored commuter.

In the bike biz, there is definitely a fool born every minute. What idiot would shell out 3.5k for a steel commuter?

@mudrock your likely right. As much as I can the value in 3500 for something more or less custom, with refined component speck that is unique, something like you see at NAHBS… this has a 20 dollar seatpost and a few other low end parts, shame.

This “custom” steel bike thing is getting out of hand. While, yes, they are made by waterford, I see nothing to get excited about here. Crap component spec with the already mentioned dreadful threaded headset.

Okay the frame is made by Waterford, so its nice, but there a other small builders in this price range (for this kinda bike) too. If this was 4 or 5 years ago I’d say they have something. But what are they bringing to the table with this offering? I feel like this venture is just late to the game. Just another ‘mee too’.

Looking at their website they just a design house trying to brand their work–its a ‘designed by us, handmade by others with reputations’ outfit.

These bikes are pretty. I like how more bikes nowadays have the elegant French-style fork bend near the bottom. I hope more manufacturers copy the aesthetic.

I would gladly pay $300 for one on Craigslist in 10 years from a rich person who bought one, rode it three miles, then put it in the garage.
