Ever since the Digit Datum appeared on Kickstarter, it’s been a popular source of discussion. And for good reason – the bike features a fascinating take on a rear suspension system that centers around their proprietary Integer Strut. With that Strut built into the top tube as part of their Analog Suspension platform, the design promises better performance thanks to the larger oil volume, while also claiming to be more reliable and easy to rebuild.
Now that the Datum is fully available from Digit Bikes, they’ve introduced another model. A prototype called the Ring.
Still just a prototype, we’re told that the Ring will feature 125mm of travel (give or take 5mm). Meant to be paired with a 140mm travel fork, the Ring will occupy the space below the 140/160mm travel Digit Datum. Most likely, the Ring will run 29″ wheels front and back unlike the mullet Datum.
Updated: While at the Philly Bike Expo, we were able to check out more of the Ring in person with founder and creator Tim Lane giving us a detailed look at the ins and outs of the Integer Strut. In order to get that massive shock into the frame, it’s loaded through the head tube through an opening that’s concealed by the head badge.
The prototype also features an integrated headset with bearings that drop straight into the frame. In spite of the giant hole in the front of the head tube, Tim pointed out how much material was left above it.
The 12″ long Integer Strut broken down to show the internals and size of the components.
It’s a bit hard to tell what’s going on at the bottom bracket just by looking at the frame – Tim showed us the inner workings which all rotate around the crank spindle.
We’re also told that the lower link slopes to the left, to help shed mud away from the drivetrain.
The Ring is expected to launch in early 2023. More soon.
