The new DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut Disc carbon rear wheel promises to speed up long distance races against the clock, with light weight and improved aerodynamics to round out their ARC aero road wheel lineup. DT calls the disc brake only, tubeless ARC Disc wheel the fastest they’ve built, optimized for modern wide 28mm tubeless tires…
DT Swiss ARC Disc light, tubeless disc brake time trial/tri wheel
DT’s goal with their ARC Disc project was to finally close out their ARC aero wheel lineup developed with SwissSide since 2017. Now paired with 80mm or 62mm deep wheels depending on time trial or triathlon course profiles and wind conditions, the ARC Disc will help riders go faster.
A weapon of choice for races against the clock, the new disc wheel is meant for racing over flat to rolling hilly courses, in calm to moderate winds, and ideally in slight crosswind conditions as the entire ARC lineup benefits from negative drag (sailing effect) at relative wind angles of 15° (factoring in forward speed).
DT calls it their “fastest Aero wheel for long-distance triathletes and time trial cyclists who seek their ultimate performance and best possible results.”
Aero Tech Details
The new wide tubeless ARC Disc wheel is constructed of a series of pre-fabricated carbon sandwich (pie) slices, that are then ultimately bonded together in Switzerland to create the final wheel shape.
A construction that produces a smooth transition from wheel to tire that DT claims makes it faster than the competition paired with an ARC 80mm front wheel, saving up to 2W over a similar Zipp 808/Super 9 setup, or similar savings over a pair of matching 80mm deep DT Swiss ARC wheels.
Weight is kept low and stiffness high, by constructing each side of the wheel using 8 segments made of hi-mod carbon over top of a thin inner foam wedge. To manage asymmetric drive & braking forces, the asymmetric wheel features a flat face on the driveside and a slightly convex non-driveside (disc-side). The non-driveside valve hole is finished off with a tool-free cover, inside of which DT has printed the max tire & pressure limits.
Rim width is the same 20mm internal hooked tubeless bead optimized for 28mm tubeless clinchers (min 25mm, max 32mm) as the rest of the current ARC aero road wheel family. Wider tubeless tires allow lower tire pressures which have been proven to lower rolling resistance, and also improve both grip and bump-eating comfort over long distances. DT Swiss lists a claimed 1100g weight for the ARC Disc wheel placing it near the lightest disc wheels out there (with a 110kg max rider+bike weight limit.)
At the heart of the wheel is a new lighter top-tier centerlock disc brake DT Swiss 180 hub with 36T Ratchet EXP internals and light & smooth SINC ceramic bearings. The wider bearing spacing of the new 180s improved durability & lowered internal drag, and the new thru-axle hub is compatible with all major freehub bodies, plus tool-free interchangeable end caps.
DT Swiss ARC Disc – Pricing, options & availability
The new DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut Disc rear wheel comes standard with a Shimano 11-speed Light freehub body for $2967 / 2238€ with red vinyl decals to match current DT ARC aero road carbon front wheels.
Included in that price is one rear wheel pre-taped for tubeless, an alloy tubeless valve, a valve adapter for easy inflation with standard floor pumps, an extra spare valve hole cover, and a wheel bag.
DT Swiss also includes shiny gold, chrome & gloss black decals to custom match your bike setup, also including matching stickers for your ARC front wheel. SRAM & Campagnolo freehub bodies are sold separately.
