Kolelinia has put forth a radical concept in bike lanes – the high wire!  Made up of a small channel for your wheels and handlebar cable guides that keep you on track, the Kolelinia concept is intended to ferry cyclists over trouble spots or areas where traditional bike lanes aren’t practical.

Yeah, the technical aspects of keeping your wheel perfectly straight in such a design (among other things) are not fully fleshed out (although you could just let go of the handlebar and let the channel guide the bike while you sit up and pedal), there was a laudable amount of thought put into the handlebar guide design.  Pics below, and there’s video on their website.  And if you fall?  Well, first, don’t fall.  But if you do, there’s a safety tether to keep you from actually hitting the ground.

OR save millions in tax dollars by putting forth an educational initiative and include in driver education and driver license testing that teaches bicyclists rights in traffic.
I wouldn’t ride that high up… That would scare me worse than riding in heavu traffic

Cool concept. Lots of infrastructure. I like Drew’s point. The oldest argument is to ride on the sidewalk and then what? careen down a path where anyone’s Grandma and poodle clothesline you with the leash. The road is everyone’s right. The use of a motor vehicle is a PRIVILEGE. Abuse it by endangering others and that privilege needs to be revoked. We do need to challenge these motor vehicle operators. Any other state license, you need CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS, CEU’s in order to be allowed to practice. Why should driving be any different??

Radical idea indeed, thought out at all? Not whatsoever. This has got to be one of the worst schemes I’ve ever come across in hopes of finding bicycle friendly routes. First, a tether is just that, a tether. If you fall, you’re screwed because you like many people out there may just not have the upper body strength to pull yourself back up onto an awkwardly placed bicycle. Secondly, how would anyone account for trying to secure the hundreds of thousands of road bikes out there to this one miracle device? Are you scared of heights? I probably would be after trying to ride that thing. Someone from Kolelinia has been hitting the bong too hard.

Nothing says “the Future” quite like a dirigible.

How am I going to pass grandma and grandpa riding their bicycle built for two?

Apparently the dirigible is used to safely remove cyclists hanging by their tethers.

I have a better idea… build bike ramps and we can just launch over the problem spots!!!

No, I’m just getting word that this is actually the *worst* idea in the history of bicycles.
