The Asheville (NC) Citizen Times reports that the local EMS has seen an exponential growth in mountain bike accidents, with 911 calls related to riding injuries tripling.

The accidents included two deaths in the past three years, with July being the busiest month.  Those interviewed respond to accidents in the Bent Creek area, home to the Asheville area’s most popular trails (and lately, we hear, secret training grounds for Niner Bikes’ Fuzzy).

Basically, here’s what you can do to help avoid becoming a statistic:

  • Wear your helmet (properly).
  • Carry a cell phone.
  • Keep hydrated and have basic repair tools.
  • Don’t push your limits too much.
  • Ride with someone.
