Dutch wheelmaker FFWD has rolled out the third generation of its affordable TYRO carbon wheelset. The update refines the platform that has long served as the entry point to the brand’s performance lineup. The updated wheels bring a revised rim profile, a newly developed in-house hub platform, and a modest weight reduction, all while keeping the price unchanged.

TYRO has always occupied an interesting spot in FFWD’s range. With this latest version, FFWD focused on improving versatility and real-world usability without losing sight of the wheel’s original purpose: dependable carbon performance at a relatively accessible price. One wheel, many tire options.

Updated Rim Profile

The biggest update is the rim itself. The new TYRO uses a 45mm-deep full-carbon clincher rim with a 23mm internal width and 31mm external width. That wider internal measurement reflects where modern road and all-road setups have headed over the last few years.

A wider rim supports larger tires and helps them maintain a more stable, rounded profile. FFWD lists 25mm as the minimum tire size and up to 45mm as the maximum, which effectively pushes the TYRO beyond traditional road duty and into the all-road/gravel category.

The 45mm depth remains a balanced middle ground. It’s deep enough to deliver noticeable aerodynamic gains on faster road rides while still being predictable when the wind picks up. FFWD shapes the rim using its AeroShape profile, intended to smooth airflow while maintaining stable handling in crosswinds.

Built for Modern Tire Sizes

The wider internal rim width of 23mm (31mm outer) pairs particularly well with the now-common 28–32mm road tires. Though riders looking to venture onto rough pavement or light gravel can comfortably step up to the high-30mm or even low-40mm range.

FFWD TYRO Hub

New N/LITE Hub Platform

At the center of the wheel sits a new component entirely: FFWD’s N/LITE hub.

The hub was developed specifically for the TYRO but borrows design principles from the company’s higher-end N/GAGE hub. You’ll find the N/GAGE hub on the toptier FFWD RYOT and DRIFT wheels.

FFWD TYRO Rear

The N/LITE hub uses a revised shell design that trims unnecessary material while preserving structural strength. Internally, it runs on FFWD’s ratchet-style engagement system, a mechanism known for reliability and relatively simple servicing.

FFWD TYRO Front

Freehub options include Shimano HG, SRAM XDR, Campagnolo, and Microspline, allowing compatibility with nearly every current drivetrain.

Internally, the hubs spin on robust steel cartridge bearings of fairly common sizes.

  • Front hub: 2× 26157-2RS
  • Rear hub drive side: 6902-2RS
  • Rear hub non-drive side: 26157-2RS
  • Freehub body: 2× 6802-2RS

Sapim Sprint Spokes and Classic Lacing

The wheel build itself uses Sapim Sprint spokes, a well-known performance spoke that balances durability and weight. Both wheels use straight-pull spokes paired with DT Pro Lock brass nipples, a combination chosen for strength and long-term reliability.

The TYRO keeps a 24-spoke configuration front and rear, laced in a 2-cross pattern on all sides. That layout should provide a good balance between stiffness, strength, and serviceability.

Lighter Wheels Without Changing the Price

Thanks to the revised rim and hub construction, the new TYRO sheds around 100 grams compared with the previous generation.

The final weight is listed as:

Front wheel: 725g
Rear wheel: 850g
Complete wheelset: 1575g

Those numbers place the TYRO comfortably in the lightweight carbon all-road category while still retaining the durability expected from a wheel designed for everyday riding.

Designed for Real-World Riding

While many carbon wheels chase ever-lower weights or extreme aero shapes, the TYRO remains focused on practical performance. The 45mm rim depth, wider internal profile, and durable hub architecture make it equally suited for fast road rides, endurance training, or mixed-surface routes where tire volume and stability become more important.

Price and Availability

Despite the updates, FFWD has kept the pricing unchanged. The third-generation TYRO wheelset is available for €1,099, with immediate availability through FFWD dealers and direct channels.

What happened to the 105% rule for aero rims?
