Fizik has added a new GORE-TEX lined shoe to its winter line-up; the Fizik Ergolace GTX for MTB, in both flat-pedal and clipless models. Joining the Fizik Artica GTX range made for the icy cold winter months, the new Ergolace GTX is aimed at the slightly warmer, but considerably wetter weeks and months that book-end them.

The Ergolace GTX is largely equivalent to the Ergolace, only with the addition of a proven semi-permeable membrane that works to keep feet dry on the wettest of rides. Here’s a quick overview.

Fizik Ergolace GTX

The new Fizik Ergolace GTX retains the Italian brand’s trademark aesthetic, with laces tracking up toward the outboard edge of the shoe, terminating at a position offset of center.

You’ll see this design right across Fizik’s MTB lineup, including the Gravita range for DH and Enduro riding. We have to say, on the Gravita Versor flat pedal shoe we tested previously, the “ergolace” concept did contribute to a shoe that offered outstanding comfort.

The Ergolace GTX announced today takes a similar design, and adapts it to more of an all-rounder shoe. Trail riding, bikepacking and gravel fall under its list of intentions.

As such, the sole is a little more flexible than the sole of the Gravita range, with a stiffness index of 3. That should make it a little more comfortable for walking in when the gradient demands you hike avec bike.

The highlight is the GORE-TEX membrane, or more specifically the semi-permeable, three-layer PRISM 3L membrane. It is said to be 100% impermeable in the outside-to-inside direction. Going the other way, the membrane is said to allow moisture and condensed sweat to pass through the membrane, wicking it away so that your feet remain dry, and thus warm.

Atop the membrane is a durable, ripstop fabric.

Fizik continue their partnership with Vibram for the outsole rubber, calling on the same so-called MegaGrip compound implemented on the standard Ergolace shoe, an the Gravita shoes (review here).

On the Ergolace GTX Flat, the tread pattern is quite aggressive, with rows of rectangular blocks positioned to interface with the pedal pins. Toward the front and rear of the shoe, the tread pattern goes deeper with the use of chevrons.

Not stylish enough.

Are we supposed to know what the stiffness index range is? Because just saying it’s a 3 doesn’t help much… 3 of 5? 3 of 7?

If the gravel shoes are any indication, the stiffness range goes up to 10. I have their Terra X4 Powerstrap, and those are rated a 6

No ankle coverage so water will just run down in to the shoe and stay wet, pointless

GoreTex is a marketing tool for “Idiots will buy it because they believe in Magic”. Nothing branded GoreTex is actually water proof. Book it
