Until there’s an app for fixing your bike, opening a beverage or hacking your way through some impromptu trail work, there’s the Task One.

It’s a protective iPhone case for either 4/4S or 5 that houses an aircraft grade alloy multi tool inside a polycarbonate shell. Not only does it house a Swiss Army Knife’s worth of gadgets, it’s got your more commonly used bicycle tools, too. Oh, and it’s still thinner than many other phone cases.

Video above is a great run down, click through for photos and a list of tools…

Task One iphone 4-4S-5 case with multitool and swiss army knife gadgets

The case weighs in at just 89g – 96g and will be available in three standard colors: Slate Gray, Cherry Red and Jet Black. Pledge the right amount in their IndieGoGo campaign and you can get a limited edition Orange Flame (safety orange?) version. The minimum pledge to have a Task One headed your way in April is $75, and they’ve got 10- and 100-packs of them for distributors looking to get an early supply for resale.

Task One iphone 4-4S-5 case with multitool and swiss army knife gadgets
Task One has the following tools built in:

  • 2.5″ knife with 0.75″ of serrations
  • 1.8″ Sawblade
  • Small and Large flathead screwdrivers
  • Medium Phillips screwdriver
  • Pliers with integrated 3-8mm wrench
  • Wire cutters
  • 6 metric Allen wrenches (bike sizes 2-6)
  • Spoke Wrenchs (0.127, 0.130)
  • Wire stripper
  • 120mm ruler (110mm on iPhone 4/4s)
  • Bottle opener
  • Kickstand (for the phone, not your bike)

We’re all thinking the same thing: Can I fly with it? Yes, as long as you remove the blade, and big props to for offering a replacement blade for only the cost of shipping if TSA oh-so-pleasantly reminds you that blades aren’t allowed on airplanes that they they’ll be happy to hold that for you (whilst also taking down your personal information, making you sign some paperwork and then sending you a nice letter in the mail saying they’re keeping their eyes on you and it better not happen again or there will be consequences. Yes, that happens, even over something like an errant CO2 cartridge).

Check out the full campaign with plenty more photos and details here.

I’d rather have a better iPhone case and a separate Leatherman/Swiss Army Knife than this silly idea.

I guess you use your $400 iphone as leverage?

I don’t think it’s a bad idea if you don’t already have a multi tool. I already use my phone as a cyclometer though.

The concept makes for a cool rendering but flat Allen and Phillips bits are a recipe for a stripped screw.

Somebody obviously watched the episode of the Sitcom NewGirl where they were trying to get a sponsor for this “app” They called it the “Real-apps” but it ended up sounding like “relapse” 🙂

Looks like a bunch of cheap, flimsy tools cobbled together. I’m all for innovation but this is a terrible idea – none of the tools will be as useful as a regular multitool because they’re strapped to an iPhone, and it just increases the chance of damaging the phone. No thank you.

Great, let’s give the TSA an excuse to confiscate your whole phone. Also, it’s not 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 mm Allen keys, it’s just six flat screwdrivers, and I bet the larger ones will strip really nicely.

I don’t know why there are so many negative reviews on this product. Let’s say the tools are flimsy, the knife isn’t sharp, and it strips the screws… Well it doesn’t look like it’s meant to replace your tool kit and the steak cutting was more for an example, not to mean it’s going to replace your kitchen utensils. I saw it had a bottle opener, my phone case, sure the hell doesn’t. I like it… I’d buy it the minute it’s in production. The TSA comments are pretty useless too considering the only thing you can bring on a plane are the clothes on your back, if you’re lucky!
