Back in the 1990s the Carder Brothers started a precision engineering company on the edge of Exmoor, North Devon. They began designing and manufacturing precision medical equipment, but have moved on to designing components for the humble mountain bike. Just now, the brothers have just two products in their range; the CarderTech TWOTWELVE Flat Pedals, and a simple seat clamp. Instagram tells us a CarderTech stem is under prototyping.

CarderTech TWOTWELVE Flat Pedals

The CarderTech TWOTWELVE Flat Pedals for MTB are available in seven anodised colors; the six shown above, and silver.

The TWOTWELVE Pedals have been over two years in development, thus, we might expect them to be worth every penny of their £94.99 price tag. They take on a fairly aggressive-looking form, with 12 pedal pins; higher than your average number of pins. From initial bench testing to being put through punishing trials by their sponsored riders, CarderTech say they have designed the optimum platform size to give maximum grip and traction.

The CarderTech TWOTWELVEs are tested to British standards BS EN ISO 4210

Weighing a claimed 425g per pair, the CarderTech TWOTWELVEs are composed of a CNC machined platform with an oversized axle. They are by no means the lightest flat pedals on the market; the Crankbrothers Stamp 7 and OneUp Components flats weigh in at well under that. But Carder say the design priority was to withstand the demands of downhill mountain biking.

The TWOTWELVE pedals were designed using CAD software, including Finite Element Analysis

When you finally wear the axle out, you won’t have to throw the pedals away and buy new ones. A CarderTech TWOTWELVE servicing kit is available for £19.99. It includes 2x12mm bushes, 2x14mm bushes, 4x11mm sealed ball bearings, 2 seals, 2 o-rings and 2 Nyloc nuts. Hopefully we can get these bad boys in for a review.

These guys also sell the most over-engineered bolt up seat clamp you have ever seen. The barrel nut is self aligning and held in place with a C-clip, it’s brilliant.

No mention of the platform size. Not even on the website.

Always love to see platform pedals that don’t rely exclusively on pins for grip. A low profile Primo Tenderizer would be ideal, but these would do

Riding these pedals on my fixie (silver). They’re incredible! Never slipped a pedal once, which is ideal when you’re in traffic and you don’t want to look like an idiot. They also make my bike looks super cool. Gone are my teen days of racing DH bikes, but these give me a little slice of days gone by. haha! Carder Tech rockin it!
