Fox Racing has announced the latest evolution of its lightweight full face helmet; the Proframe RS. It’s an industry-first, too. The Fox Proframe RS introduces MIPS Integra Split Technology which comprises an inner layer of EPP and an outer layer of EPS connected to one another by “woofers” that permit 10-15mm of movement in any direction. Sounds like MIPS Spherical, right?
Indeed, it is very similar to the rotational impact protection system seen on the Giro Insurgent Spherical, except that the inner EPP layer is split into two halves, said to allow the inner liner to move better under an impact and provide more coverage.
Fox Proframe RS Helmet
The inner EPP layer is designed to manage slow speed impacts, while the outer EPS layer more commonly seen in isolation on less expensive helmets is your more traditional helmet material that is designed to handle high speed impacts. The separation of the two by the yellow elastomeric “woofers” (because they look the sub-woofers) serves to add that rotational impact protection. Just like regular MIPS, it allows for some degree of dissociation between the helmet’s outer shell and the wearer’s skull.
Also a first for Fox is the use of a BOA 360° fit retention system which replaces the neck roll used on their other helmets. This is said to improve ventilation, with reduced surface contact between the wearer’s head and the comfort liner helping to increase airflow.
The visor is adjustable and goggle-compatible with a built-in, removable GoPro mount. Other defining features are the magnetic Fidlock closure for easy helmet security and removal, and an antimicrobial liner.
The Proframe RS could be a good option for enduro racers looking for a reasonably lightweight full face helmet that is DH Certified. A large weighs a claimed 910g.
