bikenyc billboards by mother ny promoting the bicycle

  • BikeNYC has a new billboard campaign to promote cycling in the city with ads, like the one above, created by marketing firm Mother NY.
  • Join the cause: the League of American Bicyclists is hiring a Production Associate.
  • People For Bikes would like you to take their online survey. It only takes 5 minutes and you will be entered to win one of two $250 gift cards redeemable at a local bike shop or one of five schwag bags. Don’t forget to write in Bikerumor.com on the “which online websites have you read in the past year” question!
  • Portland, Oregon, is re-writing it’s “standard of service” code for street redesign to include bikes! This may not seem very exciting, but when engineers are re-designing streets, they follow old codes that promote efficiency of car traffic with no regards to cycling or pedestrian safety. Now, their engineers will have to take all forms of transportation into consideration.
  • Road Holland is having an end-of-summer sale. Use promo code “ENDSUM20” and receive 20% off all items (even clearance) thru September 10th.
  • Saturday, September 29th is Levi’s GranFondo in Santa Rosa, California. $75 tickets for the Piccolo route (32miles) are still available, the Medio (65 miles) and Gran (103 miles) are sold out, but you can try to get someone to sell you theirs, or you can go through inGAMBA. • September 10th through the 15th is the World Human Powered Speed Challenge near Battle Mountain, Nevada. More information about this unique event after the break.

Thanks to Walter Hoogerbeets for this info on the World Human Powered Speed Challenge:

Monday through Saturday the fastest bicycles in the world will compete in the World Human Power Speed Challenge at Battle Mountain, Nevada. In this race, teams try to reach the highest speed possible on a flying 200 meter. Any technology is allowed, as long as all energy for driving and controlling the bicycle is produced by the rider. Currently the world record is at 133.284 km/h (82.819 mph) by Sam Whittingham of Canada in a streamliner designed by Georgi Georgiev. This year the competition will be strong, as several technical universities joined the race. Teams to watch are the Human Power Team from Holland with Sebastian Bowier and former speedskating world champion Jan Bos, team IUT of Annecy with Aurélien Bonneteau and of course the current record holder Whittingham.
