FrostBike 2013: All City Gives us an Oooh YEAH, with the Macho Man Disc

Whether you’re snapping into a Slim Jim, or just your local cross race, All City’s aggressive cross geometry is now packaged into a geared disc version for whatever trails, roads, or cross races you get yourself into. Built from their 612 Select Cromoly steel with a mix of TIG and brazed pats, the Macho Man Disc is a simple, disc equipped durable bike – all at a very reasonable $1795 for the complete Shimano 105 equipped bike.

Jump into the ring with the Macho Man disc next.

Built with a straight 1 1/8th head tube, the Macho Man kicks it old school, with standards like the threaded bottom bracket that work – and help keep the price down. The fork features tapered, double butted legs with a lugged crown and plenty of clearance. The only think missing from this bike that the production version will have are the front fender mounts – the production bike will be completely fender ready. A Salsa Pro Moto stem and 31.8 Salsa Cowbell 3 bar give you a place to put your hands.

The front derailleur cable is routed internally through the top tube, and meets up with a Shimano CX-70 Top pull front derailleur.

The rear derailleur and rear brake cable are both protected in continuous strands of housing that traverse the bottom of the down tube and are affixed to the frame via custom cable guides.

The 135mm rear dropouts are also custom investment cast stainless units which build in the rear disc tab and the fender mounts into their vertical dropouts. As you can see the chain stay is lugged and the seat stay is tigged. As with other All City frames, the Macho Man Disc is ED coated for exceptional durability and rust proofing.

As mentioned, a 68mm English threaded bb holds an FSA Gossamer 46/36 crank in place, and has the All City Logo stamped in it to remind you what you’re riding.

Stopping duties are given to Hayes CX-5 mechanical disc brakes with 160mm rotors attached to a custom wheelset with Shimano SLX 32 spoke hubs mated to Alex Black Dragon disc rims.  35mm Kenda Small Block 8s provide fast rolling tires that will still grip whether you’re down an alley or on a cross course. It’s not very big in this picture, but that is a barrel adjuster built into the cable stop above the front derailleur – a nice touch to get rid of the in-line adjusters that just aren’t as good. The frame is also built with a pulley mount for bottom pull front derailleurs should you be so inclined. Tire clearance for the bike is said to be 700×38, or 35s with fenders. As reported while the completes will retail for $1795, you will also be able to pick up a frameset for $625. Don’t want discs? All city still has their geared version of the Macho Man with rim brakes as well.

full brake housing, boo.
very sad that this was what they released. i was hoping for a race ready macho man with a carbon fork or something.

Reviews I’ve seen of steel forks with straight steerers used for discs (Traitor Ruben, for ex) always mention brake shudder. Would expect the same from this. But a 44mm headtube and carbon fork isn’t their style. Like Surly, you have to buy into a certain attitude when you buy All-Citys. Of the QBP brands, only Salsa is willing to bend their “rules”, with their new carbon fat bike.

… or QBP’s carbon brands, Whisky and Foundry.

@mudrock: The All-City team began rigorous ride testing, parallel to lab testing, this fork nine months ago to test for ride quality. We didn’t experience brake shudder (and we were looking for it because brake shudder sucks) and we ride all kinds of stupid.

@brooks,
Full brake housing is excellent for a cross bike, what are you talking about? No chance of mud, grit, or grime gumming up your cables. Use compressionless housing if you’re worried about braking strength.

@brooks:

Full brake housing is what you need for hydraulic brakes, doesn’t hurt on mechanical ones.

I love you and what you’re going for, All-City, but I’ll be damned if displaying your new bike in a booth decorated with PBR doesn’t jump the shark a bit. I know that individualistic branding is a big part of all the Q-brands, but appealing to kneejerk hip kid imagery merely reinforces your branding with the kids who are already into it while compartmentalizing your image to anyone that might appreciate the many premium details you design into your frames and products.

I’ll throw in a hip hip hooray for full housing as well!

@Joe: Yep! That was a shadowbox elsewhere in the show… and it featured a Big Block. It looks like someone put the Macho Man Disc in there for kicks.

Any chance we are going to see a Nature Boy Disc?

I really wish it were SS compatible.

why not get a less expensive raleigh roper? the geometry is a tiny bit off, but whatever.

All-City, thank you for making cx bikes! I know you are making these to be dual purpose, which seams to ruffle the feathers of the racing crowd. As soon as you make all your cx bikes with top tube or internal cable routing, Zona tubing, and PF30 bb, most of the racers will get on board. Your geometry is racey and the UD coating is rad! I hope you keep making these bikes.

i’ll put a second in for SS compatibility. at least they could of went with a PF30 or BB30 so a Team BEER eccentric BB could be used. and i we all know they can do it with the likes of the Mr Pink frame…
