After braving the icy roads to make it out to the Minneapolis Eagles Club, exciting things waited inside. No, not the decorations from your high school prom – new bikes! Specifically new cyclocross bikes from All-City which all have disc brakes. The Macho Disc was All-City’s first cross bike with discs, but now the brand has expanded them to the single speed Nature Boy and the all new Macho King. Built for riding around town and out of town as much as they are for racing, All-City’s line up is expanding with some incredible bikes.
Check out the bikes, and a little drivetrain speculation after the break.
The show stopper here is probably the Macho King Disc Limited. The Macho King Disc itself is new as well which represents the more modern disc equipped version of the geared Macho Man. However, the Macho King Limited is a very special spec which is limited to just 50 bikes.
One of the biggest upgrades to the $3500 Macho King Limited is the thru axle Whiskey No. 9 disc fork that is painted to match. Available only on the Limited, the fork will hang on the front of the US made Reynolds 853 double butted frame. Macho Kings will have clearance for 700x38c tires and a 135mm spaced rear end.
Component highlights on the Limited model include Thomoson stems and posts, as well as a SRAM Force 22 drivetrain and Stan’s ZTR Iron Cross wheels.
As a brand built on the love of traditional steel frames, the Macho King build in modern touches like a 44mm head tube, internal cable routing, and disc brakes.
But some features like the 68mm threaded bottom bracket are left untouched.
The $2700 Macho King Disc won’t be limited, and has most of the same selling points as the more expensive Limited but with a lower spec and the Whiskey No. 7 quick release fork. According to All City Engineer Anna Schwinn, they speced the bikes as they would want to build them which speaks to the Zipp components and Stan’s rims.
A frame and fork option for the Macho King will be offered, but only on the non-limited frame.
Shown with a 10 speed SRAM Rival drivetrain, we’re told the production version will have something that is 11 speed…
Also new from All-City is the disc version of the Nature Boy which is their single speed cross bike. Priced at $1250, the Nature Boy disc is more of a value based cross bike compared to the Macho King. That doesn’t mean they weren’t sweating the details though. Little things like the impressive adjustable dropouts and the seat collar help the bike stand out. The beauty of the dropouts is in the fact that it is a true horizontal adjustable dropout that perfectly positions the disc caliper based on the wheel’s position. With the axle and the disc brake adapter bolts all loose, you can use the adjuster screw to tension the chain and as the wheel slides back, so does the disc brake. Nice.
All of the new bikes will be available this Spring.
