Gaerne’s premium Italian G.Ice Storm GoreTex winter cycling shoes get a subtle performance boost as they head into another season of cold, wet weather riding. Carrying over the same flexible waterproof & insulated uppers as before, Gaerne has upgraded both road & mountain bike soles for better grip, lighter weight, and improved stiffness…
Gaerne G.Ice Storm GoreTex Road & MTB cycling shoes
Both road & mountain bike versions of Gaerne’s made-in-Italy winter cycling boots share identical upper construction to keep your feet warm, dry & secure. Unchanged from the previous versions, a breathable synthetic microfiber upper pair with a Gore-Tex Duratherm waterproof membrane to keep rain out, helped by an elasticized Gore-Tex Rattler neoprene cuff around your ankle.
The G.Ice Storm shoes are thermally insulated to keep your toes cozy, with a heat-reflecting aluminum layer under the anatomic insole that traps heat inside. So the highly breathable Gore membranes also have to work hard to minimize moisture from steaming up inside during harder efforts.
The shoes feature a rear loop to make them easier to pull on, anti-sleep heels, a single Boa IP-1 dial to rein in a secure fit, plus anti-scruff reinforcement at the toe and sides to keep the shoes looking fresh.
What’s new for winter 2020/2021?
The performance updates this winter come by way of new outsole constructions on both road and mountain bike shoes. The road variant gets a new EPS Carbon Power Sole 8.0 construction that uses carbon fiber reinforced nylon that reduces sole stack thickness, pumps stiffness up to 8/12 on Gaerne’s scale, and lowers weigh claim to 367g per shoe (size 43).
Non-slip rubber tread block at the toe & heel (with the heel now replaceable) give you a bit more walkability off the bike. The 3-bolt cleat compatible road sole, now adds 9mm of adjustability to get you cleats exactly where you want them, and alignment marks to ease cleat setup.
On the mountain side of the equation, a new MTB 3Density Sole adds a third softer rubber compound called Thsr-IceGrip for the side of the main tread lugs and the heel, improving grip is extra cold conditions. The sole construction itself remains fiberglass-reinforced nylon with a stiffness rating of 7/12, and a claimed shoe weight of 440g (size 43). The MTB shoes also get two removable toes spike studs, for extra grip in icy or muddy conditions, plus a rubber toe bumper.
