We’ve seen them on Simon Yates as he won the final stage at this year’s Paris-Nice and under the Team BikeExchange-Jayco team in the classics; now they finally hit the stores. Giant’s updated Surge Pro shoe boasts upgrades that are functional and aesthetic, resulting in a powerful look and power to the pedals.
Giant Surge Pro road shoe — What’s new?
The next-generation Surge Pro features a redesigned ExoBeam dual-beam carbon construction outsole and Exowrap 360-degree wrap-around foot closure. The combination of the two offers a better fit and power transfer that surpasses previous models — and looks better too.
Yates and other riders from Team BikeExchange-Jayco began riding prototype versions of the new Surge Pro at early-season training camps.
“We were excited to start testing and riding the new Surge Pro shoes at our first winter camps this year,” said Yates, the leading general classification rider for Team BikeExchange-Jayco. “It was immediately clear how lightweight, efficient and comfortable they felt, and I’ve been training and racing with them ever since.”
What are ExoBeam and Exowrap?
The most significant updates to the Surge Pro shoe are the new ExoBeam outsole plate and the Exowrap 360-fit. Both play a crucial role in making the shoe more comfortable.
The ExoBeam outsole features a dual-beam design crafted from carbon fiber to offer a stiff pedaling platform with torsional stiffness without creating hot spots. The design is proprietary to Giant and can be seen on the predecessor of the Surge, but this updated form is much more refined, especially in profile.
The unique dual-beam construction allows enough torsional flex for natural foot movement. The natural movement hopes to minimize lower leg strain during the pedal stroke without compromising efficiency, especially while on long rides.
Complementing the new Exobeam is the newly updated Exowrap closure system. The new closure system is built on the redesigned Exowrap, which draws the foot up into the shoe using its unique wrap-around fit and micro-adjust Boa Li2 dials with Dyneema textile laces.
The Boa dials (two on each shoe) provide a direct pull on the inner side of the Exowrap closure for a secure and comfortable feel. The updated Exowrap surrounds the foot comfortably, instead of pushing it into the footbed.
Other updates include a new polyurethane-coated mesh upper with laser-cut micro-perforations. The seams in the upper are welded rather than sewn, which helps minimize weight and gives the shoe a sleek profile. The new material offers maximum ventilation without sacrificing durability.
Another update is a removable sock liner inside the upper, insoles with tunable arch support, and a TransTextura Plus antimicrobial layer to combat odor. The heel cup is ergonomically designed and has grippy SharkSkin material to comfortably grip the rear of the foot and provide a secure, no-slip fit.
