Peugeot’s new design team just released these images of a concept bicycle dubbed the B1K.  Sculpted as a race bike, it features a chainless drivetrain, carbon fiber construction and scant few details on the rest of the design.

Click to enlarge the images…looks like we’ll have to come up with a new term for tires.  Tubulars and Clinchers just don’t seem to fit the bill (better pic of this on down the post).  Peugeot’s not new to bikes, and it’s good to see them revisiting the idea along with killer concept cars like the SR1.

At least there are more pics when you make the jump…

What appears to be a tension cable or rod from the seat to the head tube likely keeps the bike’s wheels from doing a split when a rider’s weight is put on it, and the beam seat post likely provides some cush a la Softride.

So, those tires.  Maybe these are just warming blankets until they roll it out to the start line.

Thanks to Pépin for the tip!

While it’s always cool to see these concept bikes, it always seems like they’re a solution to a problem that no one really has. I mean, people love their bikes the way they are now, they way they’ve looked for the last however many decades. Sure, drivetrains have changed, TT and XC bikes have come around, but the overall look and feel of the bicycle has remained since we let go of the penny-farthing.

Still, it’s cool to dream.

That is beautiful! I love seeing bike companies that push the envelope with a design. I know it will probably never be made, but at least they are thinking out of the box. It definitely goes to show you that you can design a bike that is not just the same old triangle geometry. I would ride that. 🙂

Peugeot has always made gorgeous design concepts, whether the were cars of -like this one- bikes. Unfortunately their automotive range doesn’t reflect their creativity and their range is the less original one of all three French car manufacturers !

Anyway, if you want to know a bit more about Peugeot-bikes’ (market) ambitions, check this post out : http://yannigroth.wordpress.com/2010/01/12/cycleurope-refreshes-traditional-brands-gitane-peugeot/

I hope the revival will also be design related, even though I doubt it…

That is possibly the ugliest bike-like object I have every seen in my life. While I would like to see Peugeot return to the US market (and NOT as a BikesDirect brand!), I don’t think they’ll do it with freaky designs like this, but rather with old friends like the PX-10.

When peugeot return to make good bicycles, since the cars are ended forever in the cities

this is truly a remarkable “work of art”!
The future is now??

redesigning the old Bicycle is fascinating, as a (ex)designer I,m always looking of ways to improve or combine new technologies.
people don,t believe in new design until they are using it – Mobile phone – impossible

I only wish their was a place or company that would accept – individuals – concept designs

Bicycles are still in their infancy in design terms – people need to open their minds to the possibility’s

Design – is limited by the publics perception – comments like – but the future is now –
does not realise how slow design ideas take to become acceptable to the public.

Point in case , The Bug Car , and the Kia – I saw them as concept designs in 1983 (I was design student then) – think how long it was before the market (thats us) took to accepting them as a buy-able product.

I think the period between concept and product is getting shorter – but its driven by public perception
