Hey local cyclists, here’s what you need to know to do your part to improve cycling in our community, from Bicycling in Greensboro (BIG):
1) Next Tuesday, September 22, there will be 2 public meetings regarding City project that will be of interest to Bicyclists:
a) Probably more important of the 2 — Horsepen Creek Road widening project, presentation of recommended alternative.  5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church, 2715 Horsepen Creek Road.
b) Central Gateway Corridor Plan, public workshop on design standards for properties along the corridor.  The topic of this meeting won’t be as directly relevant for bicyclists, but it’s important for the bicycling community to stay plugged into this process, since the latest recommendations for the streetscape enhancements include bicycle lanes from Coliseum Blvd to Eugene St.  Unfortunately that section has been moved to the unfunded column.  It’s in the best interests of the City to fund and complete the whole corridor at once, but if that’s not possible, then it’s in the best interests of bicyclists for the Coliseum to Eugene section to be restriped for bicycle lanes when the I-40 to Coliseum streetscape improvements are constructed.  Either way, we need to keep this project on bicyclists’ radar.
2) Wednesday, October 7 is International Walk or Bike to School Day.  Safe Guilford is holding a “Walk This Way” event that day at Peck Elementary School.  They would be grateful for any volunteers to help in the morning or afternoon, to help kids get to & from school safely by foot or by bike.  They could also use help with conducting walkability/bikeability audits around the school, and judging the essay and/or coloring contests.  Anyone interested can contact Leigha Shepler at Leigha.Shepler@mosescone.com or 832-3939.
3) BIG is going to be hosting a “Candidates’ Bicycle Ride” on Saturday October 24.  We’ll be holding a breakfast & discussion session starting at 8:30 am, then getting on the road about 9:15.  We’ll have all the details on the BIG website, and sent out via the listserve, but I thought you might want to know about this.  We’re trying to get as many bicyclists to join us for the ride, and as much media coverage for the event, as possible.  This is after the primary election, but just about 10 days before the general election, so it could have a timely impact if we get enough attention on the event.
