10 years on from the release of the F20 Flat Pedal, Hope Technology is replacing it with a new design said offer an improved shoe-pedal connection and a stronger axle to boot. Having spent the last few months riding the F20 Pedals, we can’t say we felt they were particularly lacking in either of those qualities; all the same, Hope saw fit to increase the width of the platform, add more height-adjustable pins, and introduce a concavity for a “superior planted feel”. Here’s a closer look at the new Hope F22 Flat Pedals.

Hope F22 Flat Pedal

Like its predecessor, the Hope F22 pedal body is CNC machined in-house at Hope’s Barnoldswick HQ in England. We measure the platform size at 105mm wide and 100mm long, with a depth of 17mm at the outermost edge. That’s approximately 5mm wider than the F20 it replaces and 1mm thicker.

Despite the increase in size, and an increased number of pins, the F22 comes in a little lighter at 180g. That’s thanks largely to the reduced material making up the platform itself. That measured weight is with a full complement of 11 pins per side (7 long, 4 short), without the use of the optional spacers. The pins see a new hexagonal shape, resulting in more square edges to interface with the shoe rubber.

Another key update is in the profile of the pedal body itself. Where the F20 was flat, the F22 has a slight concavity toward its center that should allow the rider’s sole to flex a little. That concavity is enhanced by the revised pins; the front and rear of the pedal is designed to accomodate the long pins (6mm tall) while the middle pins on the inboard and outboard edges are much shorter at only 4mm tall. The difference in height can be reduced by installing a spacer with each of the reverse-loading long pins, reducing the effective depth of the concavity.

Internally, the F22 retains the three cartridge bearings, IGUS Bush, and internal and external seal arrangement that saw great success on the F20 Pedal, but the whole assembly now pivots about a reinforced axle said to be stronger and more impact resistant.

We are yet to put these to the test but when we do, you guys will have a full report.
