Bicycle insurance, a commonly available policy in England, Australia and New Zealand, is currently unavailable and unheard of in the U.S.  This leaves cyclists to pay for medical bills and damages themselves, with no way to recoup lost wages and other expenses in the event of an accident.

Lindsay Caron has contributed a three-part series to BikePortland.org on current progress and some round-about ways to cover your bike and yourself.  They include a few nifty ideas like paying a friend to add you to their auto insurance or just parking a $400 clunker in your driveway and insuring it to cover you.

The good news?  Talks are apparently underway with the League of American Bicyclists to offer a national plan available to all cyclists.

Check out Part One and Part Two for the scoop, and look for Part Three coming soon.
