Off-road race-ready dynamo generator wheels
Hunt developed the Proven Carbon XC Dynamo wheelset to meet the needs of their own Beyond racers – light, tough, and endless power. Like Josh Ibbet who I first rode with 9 years ago when I was introduced to Hunt wheels, soon after he had won the 2015 Transcontinental. Well now Hunt’s Beyond brand manager, Josh shared his green Mason InSearchOf adventure bike for these close-up shots of the new wheels.
The heart of the Proven Dynamo wheels is of course the also-proven SON 28 front dynamo hub generator. It’s the benchmark dynamo for any modern disc brake wheel build. And it’s especially been developed for efficiency and high power output at slower MTB speeds. So you can count on plenty of light, even when you resort to hike-a-biking.
The wheels are hand-built by Hunt, starting out with their standard Proven Race XC MTB rims, but with additional 3k weave carbon reinforcement around the spoke holes for even more durability. Especially important for a carbon rim ridden hard with fully-loaded bike off-road, far from any hope of repair or replacement if there were an issue.
The carbon dynamo MTB wheels are then laced 3-cross with 28 conventional J-bend triple-butted spokes and brass nipples front & rear for durability and serviceability. And they feature Hunt’s new fastest Rapid Engagement rear hub. With a 90-tooth engagement ring and 6 2-toothed pawls offset in groups of three, you get positive engagement nearly instantly at just 2° (180 POEs).
