The Examiner has followed up with Iowa’s Legislative Information Office and received this response:
“The legislature will never abolish bicycle travel in Iowa, rest assured,” said Mandy Easter at the State Law Library.  She bolstered the statement by saying the Iowa does not recognize petitions as a means of introducing new legislation.
As we’ve mentioned, RAGBRAI brings thousands of cyclists to the state every year, dumping lots of tourism money into the economy, and they’re not likely to hurt something that’s so beneficial.  It’s certainly made for some interesting online banter, but now it’s time to let this go quietly…
