PRESS RELEASE: Cycling legend Lance Armstrong will return to South Australia to compete in the Tour Down Under in January 2010. Premier Mike Rann confirmed the seven-time Tour de France winner’s return to Australia following a meeting with Lance Armstrong in Dublin.
“I’m delighted to announce that Lance Armstrong will be back in Adelaide to race in next year’s Tour Down Under,†said Premier Rann.
“In another coup for South Australia, this will be the first time Lance’s new team, Team RadioShack, will compete anywhere in the world.
“I’ve been in regular contact with Lance and his management since he made his world cycling comeback in Adelaide at the 2009 Tour Down Under.
“He really enjoyed his time in South Australia and has told me how much he appreciated the massive support he received from the thousands of cycling fans during the race and from the communities supporting the launch of his global cancer campaign.â€Â
Lance Armstrong’s participation in the 2009 Tour Down Under had a big impact on the event and provided an opportunity to showcase South Australia to a worldwide audience.
“Lance’s comeback to world cycling in Adelaide at the beginning of the year was enjoyed by record crowds here in South Australia and by millions more watching on TV around the world,†said Premier Rann.
“This year’s event saw tens of thousands of visitors travel to South Australia from interstate and overseas, injecting a massive $39million into our economy.
“Visitors to next year’s event will not only get the chance to watch the world’s most famous cyclist in compete in Australia’s best cycling race, they’ll also be able to enjoy the wineries, beaches and other attractions that the State has to offer.â€Â
“The Tour Down Under is a fantastic event, and with Lance and his new team competing here in January 2010, it is one not to be missed.â€Â
