You thought you were having fun in college? It couldn’t have been nearly as much fun as the kids at Lees-McRae , who, starting this year, will be able to get a minor in “Bicycling Studies” as part of the official college academic program.
Based in Banner Elk, NC, the school is surrounded by great trails for b0th road and mountain bike riders, and has become a powerhouse on the collegiate racing circuit. According to USA Today, one in ten students enrolled at Lees -McRae in 2008 was a member of the cycling team, and we can only expect that ratio is on the rise. With famous alumni like BMC Racing’s Brent Bookwalter, the program looks to expand in years to come, with the school president Barry Buxton saying that he hopes to eventually have 150 cyclists enrolled, bringing home more national championships while preparing students to work in the cycling community, on or off the bike.
