Pinarello is celebrating 4x Tour winner Chris Froome getting back on the bike after his nasty summer crash with the unveiling of their even lighter Dogma F12 XLight road bike. The Dogma F12 got a major overhaul with more aero gains, more integration, and even improved tire clearance this past spring. But now in their classic X-Light configuration it sheds some extra grams too…
Pinarello Dogma F12 XLight lightweight carbon aero road bike
The beauty of Pinarello’s X-Light concept is that the details remain the same, but the bike just gets lighter. Stiffness & aerodynamic improvements vs. the F10 all carry over – 10% more lateral stiffness and a claimed free 8W or 1 second per kilometer at 40km/hr.
Dogma F12 XLight weight savings
The Dogma F12 XLight sheds its weight by getting a more carefully optimized material mix & layup schedule. It predominantly uses an ultra hi-mod Torayca T1100G UD unidirectional carbon material (vs. the traditional T1000 1K weave of the standard frameset) with its own lower resin content. That allows Pinarello to drop 60g or ~7% off the frameset, but it requires some additional mold modifications and a slower, more controlled manufacturing process to work with the less forgiving materials.
Starting with a claimed 820g rim brake frame & 840g disc frame (unpainted, frame-only weight claims), total framesets shed 60g off both rim & disc brake variants. It is spec’d with the same Onda F12 fork with aero ForkFlap tips, so likely frame weights come down to around 760g for raw rim brake frame & 780g for raw disc brake frames.
Froome got back to competition this week, so Pinarello painted up this one-off bike to welcome their champ back into the fray. While you’d have to earn a bunch of Grand Tour victories to get the same paint job, the F12 XLight is available with a few more conventional finishes.
Tech details
Both rim & disc brake bikes are UCI approved and come in a wide eleven size range from 44-59.5cm seattubes. Both share the asymmetric aerodynamic frame improvements of the standard F12 with total internal cable routing (TiCR), sleek but external hidden seatpost clamp, multi-position bottle cage bosses, a threaded BB, and drop-in 1.5″ straight headset. It also gets built up with Pinarello house-brand Most Talon Ultra integrated handlebar and their proprietary aero seatpost, all with titanium hardware. Tire clearance remains the same as the F12 for use with 28mm tires on modern wheels.
The standard F12 is available in shops now. This new Dogma F12 XLight is said to be open for pre-order now through your local Pinarello dealer – with Black-on-Black and Team Ineos replica paint jobs for either braking preference, or a mostly white UK National Champ replica in disc brake only.
