Marla Streb to Build Singletrack on Mount St. Mary’s Campus in Maryland

Marla Streb, former World Champion mountain bike racer and Mount St. Mary’s alum, has responded to the death of a student there by volunteering to help design a world-class trail system.

Elizabeth DiNunzio, a 22-year-old Spanish major, was struck and killed in April as she was running along a main road near campus.  Police say she did everything right (stayed to the side, ran toward oncoming traffic, no headphones, etc.), but the driver of the truck veered into her path.  (Disturbingly, the driver apparently is only being charged with negligence and failure to avoid an accident…hello?).

At that, a group of university officials are taking action to create a safer place for students to exercise, and in an encouraging bit of foresight, the tapped Streb to design a trail system good enough to attract top cyclists.  Read the full story on at BaltimoreSun.com.
