With an internal width of 40mm, you can’t fault Mavic for being too narrow here. Their new XA Elite+ wheels are built specifically for wider tires, though they say the acceptable range is from 2.35 to 3.2″. Using ISM4D machined aluminum rims, steel spokes, and straight pull hubs with their ITS-4 freehub design, the wheels have a claimed weight of 1900g and a price of just $649 in 27.5″ wheels only.

Initially launched last year at Eurobike, Mavic is happy to point out that Sam hill rode the new Deemax Pro wheelset to the overall Enduro World Series Championship in 2017. The wheels feature a staggered width of 28mm internal up front and 25mm internal out back, with Zicral spokes, an ISM4D rim with UST rim bed, and  QRM+ straight pull hubs for $1099, and is sold without the Claw Pro XL tires.

Moving on to helmets, Mavic has an interesting new lid with the XA Pro. Built with a Clima Flow ventilation system, EPS 4D foam, and a unique brim/visor, the helmet is priced at $149.95.

The Crossmax SL Pro is a MIPS equipped helmet that is more race oriented with a dial retention system and price of $169.95.

Mavic follows a similar pattern with their new shoes with an XA Pro shoe that is more for the plus/adventure/trail crowd. Using an Energy Grip Trail+ outsole with a carbon composite inner plate that is SPD compatible, the shoe combines a dial retention system with a velcro strap for easy adjustability at $179.95.

The Crossmax Pro is again more race focused with a carry over design and new colors for 2018 and a price of $249.95.

Finally, new Deemax Shorts and undershorts add to their clothing collection for aggressive riding at $129.95/$69.95 (undershort sold separately).

Expect the wheels to show up in shops by November 17, while the apparel won’t be hitting stores until January and March of 2018 depending on the item.

That little tailfin on the XA Pro looks pretty silly. Is it just there to keep the logo in sight?

Duh,… don’t you understand, it’s a critical component of the “Clima Flow ventilation system”. Without it the system could simply… stop ventilating, which would render you with an oven strapped over your head, much like Mavic’s competitors’ helmets. 🙂

the wheel price and spec is great, they might have been lagging in the width dept but their rim and build quality has been as good as it gets since they went away from the igus bushing in the driver a long time ago.

Yeah, I find it interesting that they say you can use as small as a 2.35 tire on these. Does that mean that they have finally let go of their attachment to ISO recommendations of tire/rim width, or is the long awaited ISO update finally here?

27.5? Who even has a bike for that anymore. It was little more than a fad and then everybody dropped it when the real science came out that 29er wereina of course faster, better. Even 26″ rated faster than 27.5….snore…

Yeah, all the cool kids are now on 26+, or even 28.875″(614mm BSD). None of ’em use Mavic stuff though.

Oh, did you hear, Rivendell will have a 28.875″ equipped bike next year!

I feel as though Mavic has been behind in the wheel market for a long time now and they were the ones that started this whole “complete wheel system” thing. But took them so long to come out with a carbon clincher, wider rims and better hub system. I like Mavic wheels but industry wise they are lacking especially with distribution and keeping up with popular tech.

Interesting to see Amer Sports adding Mavic into the hard-to-navigate world of calling all “trail” product XA, along with their Salomon brand-mates. However, if it means their mtb shoes fit in the same fashion as the majority of the Salomon XA series, I may finally have a shoe choice that fits my dumb feet.

Hard pass on the Crossmax helmet though. I’m sure it has passed all the right impact tests, but I’m fairly certain there is no test for dragging/snagging injuries. That hook on the back looks ready to snag during a crash and jack up your upper spine in short order.

Still, combined with the new road rims, this looks to be a promising couple of years of development over at Mavic. I’m interested to see how it keeps up.
