Come March, Mavic will import a limited run of 1,000 new Ksyrium wheelset systems to the U.S.  Dubbed the K10, it becomes the top-level wheel in the Ksyrium line (replacing the Ksyrium Premium) with specially matched tires, a first for Mavic.

“We’re taking that system approach one step further and adding that last element to the wheel by adding the tire,” said Sean Sullivan, Mavic’s domestic marketing director. “We believe that to make the next big jump forward in the wheel system we need to include the design of the tire.”

The tires will be available in different models to achieve certain performance characteristics by blending different tread compounds (GripLink), puncture protection (ProtekLink) and the TPI / casing density (PowerLink).  The variations of each will make for tires that suit different riders’ needs by altering grip, weight, protection, rolling resistance, comfort and durability.  Overall, though, the tires are designed with long-course road racing and Gran Fondo riding in mind. The K10 tires feature a 290 TPI tubular casing with a Polycotton and Kevlar puncture strip and dual compound tread.

The wheels get some updates, too, so keep reading after the break for weights, pricing and more info…

The K10 Ksyrium wheel system weighs in at 2,100g with wheels, tires, proprietary butyl tube and steel skewers.  The wheels alone come in at 1,470g, which Mavic says is the lightest Ksyrium wheel they’ve ever made.  How?  They’ve put a carbon fiber hub on the front wheel and applied their 3D ISM machining on the sides of the rims (which alone counts for 20g in weight savings).  The tires weigh in at a claimed 225g each, and they’ll be available separately for $79 each when the wheels hit our shores in March.  The set will MSRP for $1,400 and come with wheelbags, too.
