In addition to the flax-based Vestige, Schwinn had some retro-modern urban bikes (and city and kids bikes) on display at Urban PressCamp.
The Cutter is an urban fixie with flip-flop hubs. Featured in Breaking Away as both a bike and the protagonist’s team name, this Cutter is a decidedly more urban bicycle. Available in these two colorways, one with a BMX stem/handlebar and straight fork or quill stem and curved fork. At $350 they’re made for whipping around town rather than jumping, spinning and other urban trials tricks, but they look the part. Comes with front and rear brakes mounted on the straight-gauge chromoly steel frames.
More pics and bikes after the break…
The black and gold model comes with sparkly grips and top tube pad, hearkening back to the Schwinns we rode as children.
The sliding dropouts have tension screws coming out the back.
This purple Madison joins the red version with traditional drop bars and a simpler, cleaner paint job and spec that they showed us last summer.
The Madison gets the same basic frame as the Cutter but except it’s upgraded with butted tubes. Purple theme is painted after one of their old sponsored teams from the ’80s (Wheaties?), and the logo is from the ’50s. Price is $550 and gets better spec than the Cutter, too: double wall rims, chromed bar, stem and headset, riveted saddle and better hubs.
Coffee and Cream bikes come in various drivetrains options and are classic get-around-town bikes. Schwinn’s philosophy is to just get the family out on the bike and make it easy and enjoyable. The most expensive model with Nexus internal gearing is $439.
Sizing stickers make picking the size easy, too, which is a clever way to go about it.
Not to be left out of the fun, Schwinn’s kid’s line of cruisers mimics the adult versions and has some upgraded features over most children’s bikes.
The kid’s cruisers come in 16″, 20″ and 24″ tire sizes, all include the speedometer built in. Fenders and chaincase are also included and the smallest size comes with training wheels. Girl’s is the Mini Sprite and boy’s is the Mini Corvette, which borrows the names of the adult cruisers. Coaster brake rear and front V-brake on all sizes. Prices range from $259 to $299 depending on wheel size. Frame is hi-ten steel.
Custom speedometer sensor attachment point built into the frame.
The fenders have four attachment points, which should help them hold up to being dropped on their side as kids will do.
