MRP’s newest line of chain guides hopes to solve any of the issues typically associate with 2x guides. Partnering with SRAM for its development, the final product turned out to be a mash up between the popular XCG, LRP, and G2SL guides. The result? A chainguide for modern 2X10 drivetrains that should prove to be durable, and functional.

Jump past the break for more pictures and full specs of the MRP 2X!

The new MRP 2x will be available in ISCG 03, ISCG 05, and BB mount so they will be compatible with all bikes with the exclusion of those with non-threaded bottom brackets and no ISCG tabs. Rather than running a bash guard that attaches to the cranks via the chainring bolts, the 2x will run a taco bash guard integrated into the bottom of the guide. Up top, the 2x receives the fin from the XCG which should keep the chain from bouncing off the rings and getting wedged behind the bottom bracket shell.

Rather than running the dual level roller the LRP used to have, the 2x will be equipped with two side by side pulleys to keep the chain in place regardless of where the chain is on the cassette (it should improve function when pedaling backwards too). The pulleys should also reduce friction and keep the noise of the system to a minimum. While initially designed for 10 speed, the 2xs will be compatible with 9 speed 2x drivetrains as well.

Features:

  • MRP’s patented skid (US Patent 7,066,856), removable for those who prioritize weight savings over protection (43g savings)
  • Patent-pending dual pulley design provides precise chain engagement while reducing noise and drag
  • Raised top fin profile prevents the chain from dropping to the BB shell
  • ISCG, ISCG-05, and BB mounting options
  • Compatible with 9 and 10 speed drivetrains
  • Available in black or white
  • Weight -36-38T w/ skid – 130g (ISCG-05 model), 39-42T w/ skid – 144g (ISCG-05 model)

Something tells me that this is not VPP compatible unless the dremel comes out to play.

Noah Sears at MRP was testing the first protos on his LTc so fingers crossed no dremel work for a change

Think I could run a full bash instead of the taco?

Guide will not keep chain from throwing from the top, and the front derailleur hanger won’t either if you ride aggressive. Constant chain throws to the crank side. The lower chain guide plate with the 2X logo is not made of a durable plastic. Mine lasted about 5 weeks; the inner plastic around mount bolt simply crumbled away. For the price, more problems created than solved with a 2×10 drivetrain. I’m going 1×10, and with an e13 LG1+; this guide has been bomber on a DH setup of mine. Done with mucking around with front drivetrain issues. Though 2×10 works better on some frame/shocks than others…I’ve decided 2×10 has a place for XC racing, but does not belong in long travel trail riding.
