NAHBS 2010 – Got a bike that does double duty as a commuter and a performer?  If you’re tired of swapping pedals or shoes between them, or having to wear your regular cycling shoes to work, White Industries has a solution.  Their new interchangeable pedal axle Quick Release Cranks allow you to thread two sets of pedals into the included axle inserts, then swap them in a matter of seconds with no tools.  The only catch?  You’ve gotta run White Industries’ chainrings and a square taper bottom bracket.

Shown above installed and clipped into place, the extra axle is sitting in front of the crank.  Check after the break for photos of how it works.

To release, press in a ball bearing and slide the catch up, then pull out your pedal.  When installed, the catch notches into the ridge on the axle insert.

The inside of the driveside crank has the spline pattern to attach White Industries’ chainrings.  The QR Cranks will retail for about $50 – $60 more than their regular cranks.

i saw these cranks at the show, and while i wouldn’t benefit from these myself, it was a great idea, well-executed, and one of only a few true, useful innovations on site in richmond last week.
