This an answer to a problem that you may or may not know existed: when you listen to just one earphone, you are hearing your music in mono. And, if you like music, that totally sucks. I once had a roommate who had a crappy, old stereo. I’d come home and she’d be blasting AC/DC “Back In Black” cranked up to 11. Only problem was, one of the of the channels was blown on the stereo, so the main guitar riff from the song was entirely missing. It went — “Dun, dunna dun, dunna dun…Dun, dunna dun, dunna dun.” For someone who knows the song, it was glaringly obvious that it was all wrong. For someone who really likes the song, it was excruciatingly painful. It was like biting into a B.L.T and not tasting bacon.

Nice find! I’ve been looking for something like this for awhile now but never really found anything good. These looks promising and you can’t really go wrong with the price either. I’m putting in an order…. NOW!

I’m surprised people are eating up this marketing. I don’t quite see the difference between this and just setting up your mp3 player to play in mono. This seems to just take that further by chopping off the other side off your earphones.

You can do “mono right/left” and just tuck the other ear bud, so you have the option of running both later. If your player doesn’t have such options, spend 10 minutes installing Rockbox firmware on it. With the installer, I’d imagine even if you barely know how to load music on your player, you will be able to do it.

I dunno why people look at the price and say that’s great. I see dicky has some reservations to sound quality, but I’ve been spoiled by good audio quality (Sennheiser HD-590s for 10+ years, TripleFi earbuds since last thanksgiving). “Great bass sounds” serves as an indicator that these earbuds focus on lows more than mids and highs. Anyone that has shopped speakers, know that there are often more than 1 driver in their satellites for mids and highs and they have a subwoofer for lows. What would mids and highs sound like if you had them handled by your sub only? A bit of an exaggerated dramatization, but gives the idea of what a single earbud driver can do. I think this would put them in the same class as SkullCandy earbuds, at best, which has sound quality that’s repulsive to me.

True value in the earbud market around $30 would be something like the Altec Langsing Backbeat Pro UHP606, which were $25 for a very long time (they seem to be finally running out of supply now). Uses the same high quality tech as the Ultimate Ears SuperFi, but at a bargain price. I still have a set, but lost all the rubber ear pieces that fit my ear well over the ~2 years I’ve used them.

While that Altec earbud blows away low end earbuds, the Monster Turbine, which sometimes pop up on Amazon for $60, is a relatively big step up from those. Those offer a relatively wide range of quality sound, great bass with clear highs and mids (the Altec had a narrower range with more mid-range bias). The TripleFi, which can pop up for $95 from amazon, is yet another big step up, since it has 3 drivers, each handling lows, mids, highs separately. They stay in my ears better and seem less affected by passing wind as well, but take another 2 seconds to put in.

Dicky – your earbud has shipped.

Varaxis – Not all music players have the ability to mix to mono. Our earbud mixes the 2 signals in the plug end and send the summed signal to the single earphone. I believe the sound quality of our buds is commensurate with the price. OGEB has been around for about a year now, as I am able too, and as customers demand, I will develop and introduce single sided dual-driver and balanced armature earbuds similar to ultimate ears. The price range will be much higher, in the $125 to $200 range. For now, I hope that customers enjoy what I have to offer, and if they are interested in even higher end stuff, they should let me know.

when choosing a left or a right bud, is there a standard like goofy foot vs regular? right handed vs left handed or is it simply personal preference?

I am currently using some skull candies that were a free giveaway at Dirt Demo last year. Sound quality is fine for the 30 minute commute and they are low enough quality that I dont care if they get ruined some how but having an open ear would be great

Left vs Right –

It is a personal preference, as to which ear you want open. I ride on the right, so I keep my left ear open to hear stuff on the street side.

Most US/Canadian runners buy left ear ‘buds and cyclists buy right ear ‘buds. Of course in the UK or Australia, it’s the opposite.

Got mine.

As a person who had to just settle for cutting of one ear bud off all previous earphones, this is great. My older player won’t run in mono, and I appreciate the reduced heft of the cord (and no inline volume control) that pulls down on the one bud.

Clean and simple. Sounds better than anything else I ever tried, including a plug that converted stereo to mono.

And $20.

That’s about what I paid for the last Skull Candies I hacked apart. Cord is noticeably shorter (less to wind around my bibs).

Closest thing I’ve heard to stereo in my ears since I went deaf in 7th grade.

At first, these had me excited, but after looking more closely at the design, I don’t think they are good for the purpose. When I use my iPhone earbuds, the sound can travel around the earbud, so I can hear pretty well due to the non sealing nature of them. When those broke, I was looking for something for a single ear with a cord so I can have no blockage at all in 1 ear, but still have the cord. The earbuds on this post are single, but they block 1 ear due to the in canal design, rendering them to be a poor choice due to the directional nature of hearing. An iPhone style earbud that sits in the inner ear, but having both sound channels in a single ear would be great. Until then, I am sitting on the sidelines.
