Don’t have a crank with direct mount chainrings or a bike with a pressfit bottom bracket? Don’t worry, OneUp has your back. Realizing that a large portion of bikes rolling around on the trails aren’t the newest bikes with the latest standards, OneUp strives to make sure any rider can ‘work less, ride more’. That breaks down to a new 30t oval Traction ring with a 104 BCD, which is not the easiest thing to do. Prior to OneUp, Absoluteblack introduced their own 30t oval ring which uses two types of hardware to make the rings compatible with standard 104 BCD cranks. OneUp’s ring is a bit different in that they figured out a way to use the same hardware for all four bolts, and claim to have created the first universal solution for 104 BCD cranks…

With the ring mounted to the crank, you can immediately see what makes the design so tricky – the oval design makes some of the teeth barely higher than the crank arm spider. If the ring wasn’t offset from the spider, the chain would hit the crank and the whole thing wouldn’t work. OneUp’s solution involves four M5 T25 Torx bolts (or brake rotor bolts) and four self aligning washers. The critical part to the design is that these washers do not require a counterbore in the crank, which OneUp says is only available on a small percentage of cranks. With the new 104 BCD 30T Traction ring, now anyone with a non-direct mount crank can try out the 30t oval rings for themselves at just $60.

But wait, there’s more! Bottom brackets and ISCG tab standards can be a little wishy washy, so OneUp decided to put together a chain guide that would work on almost any bike with a threaded bottom bracket. Replacing the 2.5mm spacer that normally sits behind the threaded driveside cup, the chainguide is a simple way to get added chain retention for bikes with ISCG03 tabs (which aren’t supported currently), or without tabs at all. Not surprisingly, the guide is not pressfit BB compatible, so you must have a BSA threaded BB for it to work. Compatible with 26-36T chainrings and offering 5.5mm of chainline adjustment, the guide will sell for $45.

I wonder if Marcin from AB will wade into the comments here like he has on One Up’s instagram and facebook? Completely put me off ever purchasing an AB product and totally unprofessional.

^ the reason I do not buy from AB. Besides their site if full of false claims. All they have done, is a copy of the Rotor ring, and got it wrong. Still have to see a pro racer with their stuff. I think ABsolute black should remove all the false claims on their site i.e. Lightest ring, most advanced, 12 months warranty to hold chain, you go faster w oval etc etc.
