The Spring 2020 mountain bike clothing line has a feature we’re not used to seeing. Calling it the “first 100% Fair Trade Certified Sewn MTB Apparel Collection,” Patagonia is improving on the function of their clothing while also caring for the workers who are responsible for sewing those fabrics together. Made from a combination of recycled and natural materials, Patagonia claims that the new gear is made in socially responsible factories while also utilizing fewer virgin fabrics.

Now covering their entire product line for 2020, we see a few new pieces in the short and liner category to take comfort and performance to the next level. There are also a few pieces that have gotten slight revisions for the season as well.

Dirt Roamer Liner Bibs

New for the season are both men’s and women’s Dirt Roamer liner bibs. The stretchy bib liners are made from a recycled nylon/spandex fabric and an engineered 3D Italian chamois.

Packed with storage options at the rear, the bibs include a larger center pocket which is designed to hold a Patagonia Dirt Roamer jacket or similar. Two angled side pockets should work for smaller items. The women’s design is a bit different with a split in the fabric between the waist band and the pockets for the female-specific droptail design.

Leg grippers are kept to a minimum with “subtle silicone leg grips”, and snap loops are included at the waist to pair with their Dirt Craft, Dirt Roamer, or Landfarer outer shorts. Available in six sizes in both men’s and women’s, both bibs will sell for $179.

Nether Liners

Another new option for liner shorts comes in the form of the men’s and women’s Nethers. These are a simple, supportive liner with a high density, low profile and low bulk chamois to provide a “minimalist feel”. The liners include a silicone leg grip and elastic waist band and sell for $59 in six sizes.

Dirt Craft Shorts

On the outside, the Dirt Craft shorts have been revised with a longer 11 1/2″ inseam and more relaxed leg opening for kneepad integration. An adjustable bike-specific waist band has a hook and webbing adjuster to snug things up, and the shorts include a padded liner short with a low profile chamois.

Available in men’s or women’s in the usual solid colors, Patagonia is also offering the interesting Retro Layers versions. All of the shorts have two front drop-in pockets and a zippered pocket on the left hip. Sold as a pair, the Dirt Craft will sell for $159.

Landfarer Short

New for the year is the men’s Landfarer which feature Patagonia’s longest inseam for MTB shorts at 12″. These use a minimal elastic waist band with a snap closure and a lightweight DWR treated fabric. Pockets include two zipper pockets on the thighs and a drop in pocket on the left hip with a snap closure. Sold without a chamois, these run $79.

Tyrolean Short

On the womens’ side, the Tyrolean is also new and features a shorter 9 1/2″ inseam. These have no front closure at all and instead use a pull-on eleastic waist band. Two zippered pockets on the side provide storage, and the shorts are sold without a liner for $79.

With the new options and revisions, both men and women now have three choices for the outer and inner shorts to tailor to your riding style and comfort.

Capilene Cool Trail Bike Henley

While most of the other products carry over, the Capilene Cool Trail Bike Henley receives some updates for both men and women. The technical fabric features HeiQ built-in odor control and a recycled polyester fabric provides both stretch and breathability. Fit is tailored towards the riding position, and details are simple with just a button front pocket and collar. These are priced at $55 in men’s and women’s.

Video Premier Tonight!

On a similar note, if you’re looking for something to watch tonight, Patagonia is premiering their new MTB film, Becoming Ruby. Patagonia says that this is “A film about inclusion, identity and hand-drawn heroes. If you can’t find a hero, create your own; for mountain biker, skier and artist Brooklyn Bell, that hand-drawn hero was a comic character named Ruby J. Using Ruby as a role model, Brooklyn set out to “live like her, breathe like her, be unapologetically black like her,” finding her own identity in a mix of dirt, snow, art and inclusion. Directed by Dave Mayers.”

The premier and live Q & A session with the film makers starts tonight at 6pm PDT.

Can someone explain to me why MTB shorts manufacturers decided we didn’t need belt loops anymore?

many MTB shorts are now north of $100, and a lot of them don’t even include liners/chamois anymore (which are another $30 and up; which for the people who don’t use them is appreciated). yes $160 is a lot of money, but it’s really not out of line with other mtb companies (TLD, Dakine, Pearl Izumi, etc) are charging for high end shorts with a liner.

Seriously, Zach? A different cut at the waist? It’s called a drop tail and it’s the greatest thing ever on women’s bib shorts.

I like Patagonia, but they have not really been an ally to mountain bikers. They want our money, but they don’t support mtb access.

Patagonia is one of the top partners of Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship, and has been for years. They send their employees out on trail work days. They show up at events. They donate to trails. They support MTB trail access. Have you seen Dirt Magic? It cost Patagonia a ton of money to spread the word about how MTB trail access can maintain mountain economies as extraction based jobs leave. Give it a watch, it’s pretty awesome:

FWIW, Patagonia’s Endless Ride liners have shoved aside all of the liners in my drawer. Size down if you’re on the fence but they work great for me.
