Skiing Business reports that protective gear maker POC has been acquired by Black Diamond for $43.5 million.

In the interview with Black Diamond CEO Peter Metcalf, he states they liked the awareness and enthusiasm for the POC brand, with many people thinking POC was a larger company than BD. Metcalf says there are synergies between the brands, that both are driven to let athletes, whether they’re climbers, skiers, cyclists or whatever, push harder and farther thanks to well designed safety equipment. POC makes body armor and helmets as well as lifestyle pieces like sunglasses. Black Diamond is best known for their climbing, skiing and mountaineering equipment.

Going forward, Metcalf says POC will benefit from Black Diamond’s established global infrastructure and suggests the acquisition may help BD gain entry to new markets.

I dig POC products, I think they have a ton of potential but still have a lot of room for growth. I hope this doesn’t dilute their brand in any way.

POC makes killer knee and elbow pads. Their helmets are pretty sweet too, but their gloves were absolutely pathetic for the price, I felt ripped off.

Not a bad idea. I like both brands.
